MSU is the Leading University in RussiaFounded on January 25, 1755 by the decree of Empress Elizabeth, MSU was originally located on the Red Square before it was transferred by Catherine the Great to its present building on the Mokhovaja Street.
In 1905 the democratic organization was created in MSU, which aimed at turning Russia into a Republic. A great number of professors and scientists, who worked at the university resigned, including Lebedev, Chaplygin and Zelinskiy. In 1917, the university worked out a number of programs for the children of the working class, thus showing its availability to the common man. In 1940, MSU was renamed after the prominent Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, who contributed greatly to the establishment of the university.
The academic year at Moscow State University is divided into two semesters: Autumn and Spring. Obtaining a Bachelor's degree requires 8 semesters of studying, while Masters and Doctoral degrees require an additional 4 and 6 semesters respectively. The structure of MSU comprises 29 faculties, all of them offering full-time tuition. In addition to this there are 350 departments, 15 research institutes, 4 museums, the MSU Library, the University Publishing House and a boarding school for talented children. The majority of departments are situated at Sparrow Hills.
The campus of the university is being constantly developed and modernized. MSU plans to establish a number of new buildings in the near future. Several faculties to include research laboratories, a swimming pool, a recreation center and a stadium will be added to the university within a few years. Due to its resources MSU has achieved great results in the fields of laser technology, mechanics, mathematics, superconductivity and biotechnology. The graduates of the university are awarded about 800 Doctoral and 200 Higher Doctoral degrees annually. To keep pace with the world leading educational establishments Moscow State University constantly introduces new programs to its curriculum, which focus on the academic instruction and student's research work.
After acquiring theoretical knowledge, the students are expected to choose an area for their research work. The results of the research are presented at scientific conferences throughout the country.
Every year the university publishes up to 450 reference books, scientific literature, covering various aspects of history, economics, law, philosophy, philology, mathematics, politics, journalism, physics, biology, chemistry, geography and geology.
With its 9,000,000 books and periodicals, the MSU library is regarded as one of the largest in the country. About 55,000 readers visit 50 departments of the library annually.
MSU has facilitated exchange-agreements with the leading universities of Europe, Asia, the USA, Latin America and Australia and collaborates with world distinguished centers and unions.
Since the first international students were admitted to the university, it has awarded more than 11,000 degrees to students from 150 countries. The university has the enrollment of nearly 2,000 post-graduate and undergraduate students annually.
In January 2005 Moscow State University celebrated its 250th anniversary.
