Added: 01/18/2006

The world abounds in mountains and mountain chains. And, of course, there exist thousands of people, whose leisure pursuit is mountaineering. Only the conquest of the highest tops brings them real satisfaction and the sensation of freedom and power. People risk their lives to feel the splash of adrenaline and get much pleasure. Such mountain addicts often unite into special clubs to enjoy climbing together.

One of the first mountaineers clubs was founded in 1906 by Seattle area climbers. The mission of the organization was ? and still is ? to explore and study mountains, forests and water resources of the northwest of the USA. The Club often arranges expeditions to the mountains and other places to be interesting for the club members. The first such trip in history happened in 1908, the destination being the West Point Lighthouse and the quantity of the participants 48.

Nowadays these trips are much more popular, longer and more difficult, but, nevertheless, they attract a great number of people, who are really fond of outdoor activity. Seattle Mountaineers Club of the present offers about two dozen activities for the members: from sea kayaking to bicycling, skiing to folk dancing. The first branch of the Club ? the Everett branch ? was formed in 1909. Tacoma followed in 1912. Then Olympia, Wenatchee and Bellingham appeared. Presently, the Club runs about 500 branches all over America and the world. They are formed for discovering certain mountains or mountain regions.

It is very easy to become a member of the Club, two ways are possible. The first is traditional: you are to download the application form from the web site, fill it and send or fax to the Club. During a week you will receive a membership welcome package. As to the second way, it is much easier and more quickly. The only thing you are to do is join the Club online, and in a minute you will be able to enjoy all the Club member opportunities and privileges various enough to satisfy any taste.

The Club members are offered a great collection of mountaineers books, periodicals, videos, and records. You can also partake in a range of outdoor recreations, including rock, snow, water and mountaineering sports. The library of the Club is a separate case. To start with, in 1960 the Club established a special nonprofit organization called ?Mountaineers Books?. Nowadays the company is a leading publisher of outdoor books and has more than 500 titles in print annually.

Whatever activity you prefer, whether it is hiking, cycling over country roads, climbing walls or something else, you will find much interesting and useful information if join the Club and get an access to the Mountaineers Books. ?For the Freedom of the Hills: leading readers to the lessons and pleasures of the great outdoors?, so is the mission of the company.

If you are worried about the membership fee to be paid it is to be mentioned that the price is low enough, and, besides, it may be broken into several small parts. So you see you have no reasons for doubts and hesitations. If you enjoy this type of activity Mountaineers Books is absolutely indispensable for you.

But what if you don?t live in Seattle or nearby? In this case there are a lot of other clubs of the sort across the country and the world, one of the most famous being the Club of Texas Mountaineers formed in 1978. First it consisted of 15 members, but currently the membership is more than 150 people.

The best thing about this club is not only mountaineering, expeditions and a lot of other sports and cultural facilities, but also a mountaineering school. Qualified instructors will teach you that techniques, balance and control are really more important for climbing than strength and enormous gear value. You will have a chance to attend motivating and useful classes, which will sure stimulate your further interest towards climbing.

Indeed, if your life is somehow related to mountains, and you cannot imagine holidays without climbing, join the mountaineers club and enjoy your hobby together with the people sharing it.
