Added: 01/12/2006

Michigan is known for its plentiful attractions, which are as diverse, as the state itself. It differs from other states in America due its wide range of interests and melting pot culture. While the Lower Peninsula is densely populated, the Upper Peninsula is more rural. Both parts are separated by Lake Michigan. Currently Michigan claims to produce more motor vehicles than any other state in America. However, car-related sites are not its only attraction in the city. Michigan travel will reveal all the states wonders which aren't just relegated to Detroit.

Though Michigan travel is most frequently associated with the automobile industry, the state has much to offer beyond auto-related attractions. With its seven million acres of public land and eighteen million acres of forest, Michigan offers a range of opportunities for great outdoor activities.

In addition, it has over 3,000 miles of shoreline, which makes possible swimming, sunbathing, rock hounding and boating favorite pastimes. The most pleasant time for Michigan travel is autumn, when the visitors can enjoy sparkling lakes and shady trees painted in brilliant colors. One of the state's most wonderful areas can be observed while traveling along the Leelanau Peninsula, home to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The largest and most important city in Michigan is Detroit, known also as Renaissance City. Most often Michigan travel is destined for the numerous attractions of Detroit. One of the top destinations is Motown Museum, located in the house which was used as a recording studio during the period of 1959-1972. You'll catch the spirit of the music era in the Motown Museum and see the original studio, used by such legendary musicians as Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, the Jackson 5, the Temptations, and many others.

Also displayed are costumes, instruments and personal items of the musicians. Regarded as the sixth largest art museum in the nation, Detroit Institute of Arts houses one of the top art collections in the United States, featuring the outstanding collection of more than 65,000 exhibits. Comprising nearly 100 galleries, Detroit Museum of Arts displays works of world-famous artists, including Renoir, van Gogh, Rembrandt and more. Currently it is undergoing an expansion, adding new pieces to its collection. The best time to visit is first Friday of every month. Other highlights of Detroit include Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American Art, Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Science Center and more. Sites you can't afford to miss while enjoying Michigan travel.

Located in Dearborn, the Henry Ford Museum traces the history of the automobile along with other American inventions. The largest indoor and outdoor museum nationwide, it features exhibits, showing evolution of the country from rural to industrial society. 80 historic structures are preserved in Greenfield Village, including Thomas Edison's Laboratory.

And not to be ignored, Grand Rapids is home to such prominent sights as Frederic Meier Gardens, Gerald R. Ford Museum and Van Andel Museum Center.

Whatever you may choose, Michigan travel is associated with fun and adventure. The state provides a number of opportunities for winter outdoor activities. Experienced skiers are offered ski resorts around Kalamazoo, Detroit and Saginaw, as well as a number of places in the Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula, including Nubs Knob, Treetops, Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands.

You will also experience thrill of snowboarding, relax on a country trail and enjoy ice fishing. From small cabins in the woods to four-star hotels, offering full-service treatment, Michigan offers the excellent remedy to refresh body and spirit.
