Mercer Island was accessible only by boat until the first floating bridge was built in 1940! The sinking of that bridge in a huge storm in the 1980s resulted in nationwide attention; a new floating bridge was built, and expanded freeway lanes were covered with a lid. Mercer Island acquired huge new park on "found" land, the freeway lid!

Featuring more than 475 acres of parkland and open spaces, Mercer Island offers a wide range of recreational activities, including a public boat launch and several beaches. The Mercer Island Park area shares the same popularity as the famous Greenlake Park. Recreation Department takes pride in providing the highest quality facilities and services in partnership with the community to enhance livability on Mercer Island.

Once considered a weekend retreat for Seattle's elite, Mercer Island homes are often nestled in deeply forested areas, with premium properties found on the water or with spectacular views of the lake, Mount Rainer or the Cascades. There are some condos, town homes and apartments on Mercer Island, but most are single-family residences.

Islanders have a strong sense of community. They love the place where they live, and they work to preserve its values and unique characteristics. They watch out for each other, and volunteer their talents to make the Island better. They actively support their schools, civic and religious communities.

Although Mercer Island is home to some of the Seattle and Bellevue areas' highest-salaried professionals, residents say the Island's biggest asset is its educational opportunities. Both public and private schools on Mercer Island are highly regarded and its residents are considered among the most highly educated.

It's a community of serene neighborhoods and woodsy parks, minutes away from Seattle and Bellevue, yet still a refuge from the bustle of urban life.

The accessibility to both Seattle and the Eastside is superb, and the affluence is legendary. (One writer joked that many residents bait their rat traps with brie!) Mercer Islanders enjoy a safe environment and the small-town ambience of the shopping district. But more than anything, it's the people of Mercer Island who make the community so special.
