The unique German city, Mannheim traces its origins back to 766, when it was first mentioned in the Codex Laureshamensis from the Lorsch Cloister. The city was heavily destroyed in 1622 and 1689 by the French and rebuilt in the 1720s. In the eighteenth century it was home to the Mannheim School of classical composers, as well as one of the best court orchestras in Europe. During World War II, Mannheim was damaged by British and US bombing.
The history of Mannheim is embodied in its plentiful sights and attractions providing insight in what the city was like hundreds of years ago. Some of the most famous attractions frequented by visitors during their Mannheim holidays include the Fernmeldeturm Mannheim, the Pylon test facility Mannheim, Water Tower, the City Palace, Paradeplatz and Luisenpark. The Fernmeldeturm is a 205-meter high telecommunication tower designed by the architects Wischer, Heinle and Partner, and erected 1973-1975. In addition to transmission facilities for UHR radio services, this monument of Mannheim features a rotating restaurant and a glass observation desk, allowing a wonderful view over the city and the surrounding area. In 1994 at an accident part of the tower was damaged and fell to ground.
Another important must-see during Mannheim holidays and stays alike, Water Tower is recognized as one of the greatest symbols of the Jugendstil in the country. Surrounded by the conference hall Rosengarten, it offers an amazing view on sunny days. Located nearby is the City Palace, part of the University of Mannheim. Today buses and trucks are still assembled in the city, which in addition, hosts big factories, such as Alstom, ABB, Bombardier, BASF, Fuchs Petrolub AG, Siemens, John Deere and more.
Despite the fact that Frankfurt International Airport is only 40 miles north, a number of daily passenger flights from Mannheim City Airport to Saarbricken, Hamburg and Berlin have been operated since 2004.
