In 1979 James Chiu, George and Diana Chiu, and K.C. Chang moved to Ontario and bought a small Chinese restaurant with the traditional decor and menu.
They put original innovations into the menu and improved the customer service and food quality so that soon innumerous customers stood in long queers in order to experience the offers of the new Mandarin restaurant. The proprietors increased the size of the restaurant three times; however, there were still more customers than the restaurant could serve. Then, they additionally introduced the buffet, allowing to serve the customers even faster. As the popularity grew, the owners opened the second Mandarin restaurant in Mississauga. It is worth mentioning that at the 5th World Championship of Chinese Cuisine, which is hold every four years, Chef Don He, the representative of the Mandarin restaurant once again proved his world-class talent in the kitchen. Shortly after winning the Platinum Award at the International Chinese Food Display Contest, Don participated in the World Championship in Guangzhou, along with five hundred other contestants from eighteen countries. Representing the Mandarin Restaurants, Don won the gold medal for hot dishes and the silver medal for food carving.
