Seoul National University was established on August 22, 1946 as a result of amalgamation of ten schools: Gyeongseong University, Law College, Industrial College, Mining College, Medical College, Agricultural College, Business College, Dentistry College, Education College and Women Education College. The university's three functions are defined as education, research and service to society.

The aims of Seoul National University were determined by its first president Harry B. Ansted: the development of existing knowledge and creation of new innovative knowledge. The academic program provides students with understanding of the world, educates them correspondingly and encourages their intellectual development as well as professional and personal growth.

The university aims at transforming itself into an academic institution recognized worldwide. To achieve this goal it attaches much importance to the liberal education. The university plans to undertake research activities in order to enhance the strength of theoretical and applied sciences. SNU will also increase investment in development of a professional graduate school, which will conduct research. One more objective of the university is increased research co-operation and academic exchanges with other international institutions of the world.

The main campus of the university Gwanak is home to the University Administration and the majority of constituent organization. Another campus - Yongon, known as the medical campus includes colleges and research institutes related to medical science.

Seoul National University comprises Undergraduate Colleges of Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Nursing, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Engineering, Law, Education, Fine Arts, Human Ecology, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Medicine and Dentistry. The university attracts students from all over the world, offering international admissions for graduate and undergraduate programs in 5 professional schools and 15 colleges.

The academic year is divided into two semesters: the spring semester beginning in March, and the fall semester commencing in September. For the successful completion of undergraduate programs the students are required to spend four years in the residence.

Students of the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry must complete two additional years of education. Each department offers two groups of study courses: general courses and courses in major subjects. Major courses are designed to deepen the students' knowledge in specific areas and provide them with the possibility to apply this knowledge in their careers.

At least 36 credits from major courses are required for graduation, with the exception of the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry, which require a minimum of 68 credits. Each department has the right to establish or withdraw any subjects as needed. Many of Seoul National University graduates are engaged in various graduate programs in academic institutions worldwide.
