It's Time for Gelato, or Italian Ice Cream

Added: 05/17/2006

Gelato is very popular in Italy with Italians and tourists. There are stores that specialize in gelato, which is better known as Italian ice cream. Some of these places make their own gelato; others get it from small Italian gelato factories. Not all homemade gelato is the same; some places use commercial mixes, some places use fresh ingredients. Italian gelato is very good either way!

One of the must-do items for travelers in Italy is eating gelato. Italian ice cream is said to be the best in the world by many experts. Gelato is Italian ice cream, but is different from American-style ice cream. It's made up of a blend of various ingredients in a stable solution suitably balanced, pasteurized, homogenized, cold cured and churned, then held at an adequate freezer temperature.

Gelato is made from whole milk, eggs, sugar, and flavoring. Some of the fruit flavors are dairy-free; just fruit and sugar. None of them are sugar-free, so keep in mind you are getting lots of sugar in gelato. Many flavors are available. All will be on display in the gelato stand and will be labeled. Some flavors are creamier: hazelnut, chocolate, coffee, etc. Some are fruitier: lemon, strawberry, melon, etc. Gelato is available in 14 flavors at local gourmet stores and supermarkets. This Italian ice cream is made with all the premium ingredients, resulting in finest ice cream.

The chocolate base consists of cream, milk and sugar mixed with the finest imported or domestic chocolate. Fresh mint is left in the cream mixture for several days to create a mint infused base. Gelato will keep well in a tightly covered container in the freezer for several days. Like high end ice cream, gelato generally has less than 35% air - resulting in a dense and extremely flavorful product.  The gelato mixture represents the first phase that consists in putting together the ingredients which come together to make ice cream, the basis for each specific flavor.

As stabile solutions formed, the various solid ingredients should be dissolved in the liquid ingredients in very fine particles that are intimately bound and stay that way. This important result, necessary to obtain good texture of the ice cream, is achieved with the rights amounts of the ingredients and with the various operations which consist in heating the liquid parts and subsequent dispersion in sugar, fats, and other solids, and in keeping them amalgamated and equally distributed in all of the subsequent phases in the process. This is the function of the milk protein, egg, fruit, stabilizers and emulsions.

Some Italian food products use gelato as a main ingredient. These may include ice cream cake, semi-freddos (gelato cake), spumoni, cassate, Tartufo, and fruit-filled gelato candies and mignon.

Spaghetti ice cream is a derivation of a traditional European dessert, served at many European ice cream shops. Originally, it was made from Italian ice cream gelato, strawberry sauce and grated white chocolate.  There is no spaghetti in Spaghetti ice cream, just vanilla ice cream (the spaghetti), blended strawberries (the sauce) and grated white chocolate and grated almonds (the cheese).

Not only is it a delicious ice cream or gelato treat, but it is one of the most wonderful, unusual and coolest desserts you will find anywhere.

Have an Italian ice cream party. Your friends and family will love to make and eat the really fun gourmet ice cream or gelato ice cream desserts!
