ISA - a Leading Organizations in the Field of Sociology

Added: 04/12/2006

Created in 1949 under UNESCO, the International Sociological Association, commonly referred to as ISA, is a non-profit body, dedicated to scientific-related purposes in the field of social sciences. Today as ever it is committed to carrying out its mission: to represent sociologists in every field of sociology, irrespective of their ideological opinion, scientific approaches and school of thought. Currently the Association is composed of members from 109 countries worldwide.

One of the leading organizations in the field of social sciences, the International Sociological Association is a member of the International Social Science Council, which has the status of a non-governmental organization and special consultative status with the United Nation's Economic and Social Council.

The statutes of ISA were adopted at the Constituent Congress, held in September 1949 in Oslo, Norway. Subsequently they were amended at the meeting of the ISA Council in Varna in 1970, at Toronto in 1974, at Mexico City in 1982 and at New Delhi in 1986.
Since its foundation, ISA has been pursued a set of goals, related to the advancement of sociological knowledge throughout the world.

Thus, the leaders of the organization expressed commitment to strengthen and support free development of sociology in close co-operation with associations pursuing similar goals. To achieve this aim, ISA supports activities that develop and secure personal and institutional contacts among sociologists throughout the world; promote and facilitate international training and research; encourage international information exchange on developments of sociological knowledge; hold meetings and world congresses; and promote publications that support ISA's other activities.

The International Sociological Association is a non-profit organization, composed of regular and affiliated members, who may be either individual or collective. Regular collective members of the Association include nationwide sociological associations, established for scientific purposes and welcoming all active sociologists, admitted to the organization's membership by the Executive Committee's decision. Among affiliated collective members are research institutions, universities and other sociologist associations contributing to the field of sociology.

Like regular collective members, they are admitted by the decision of the Executive Committee. Regular individual membership is open to professionals and scholars, active in research and sociological training. In order to become members, they must join at least one of ISA's Thematic Groups, Working Groups or Research Committees. Affiliated individual membership of the International Sociological Association is open to applicants, admitted by the Executive Committee. Both regular and affiliate members of ISA are expected to respect principles upon which it is founded and contribute to achievement of its purposes.

ISA's Research Committees were established to promote international co-operation in theoretical research of sociology, in addition to representing their sociology branches within ISA and outside it. Each of the Research Committees has a particular sociology branch that should be defined widely enough to cover a variety of approaches to the field. Each of Committees is also free to co-operate with academic and non-academic bodies and to engage in any activity they believe to be beneficial for achieving their objectives.

Some of the organization's committees include Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution, Economy and Society, Community Research, Sociology and Education, Family Research and International Tourism Research Committee among others.
