South African vineyards abound in perfect quality grapes which only in the beginning of the XXth century were exported to Europe, however the deal was not profitable for both sides because very often grapes got out of order during the transportation and were returned to the producer.
So, an idea of wine production on the territory of South Africa was a natural and well-weighed decision. After the first South African winery was opened, the same business was set up in a lot of other regions. It was a good solution for farmers who became frustrated because of their annual losses and a decrease of overseas clients.
The Perdeberg South African winery was one of those which appeared this way. The winery's first wine season was 1942, when the first grapes harvest was pressed with the help of manual grape pressers. Today everything is different. Almost every South African winery has hi-tech equipment which stands for the quality, the reputation and respect of wine gourmets. Despite the post war demand for cheap wine, the motto "the cheaper, the better", was not for wineries which did not want to sacrifice quality for sales, and that is why they survived up to modern days and managed to create a reputable name and occupy their own niche in South African wines trade.
Winemaking industry has been acquiring new and new winemaking, grape growing and harvesting methods which every year prove to be effective and successful. Today, almost every South African winery can boast premium quality wines which are exported all around the world and are appreciated by real wine experts.
Most of the large South African wineries consist of more than one wine farm; the number of farms can reach fifty, depending on the variety of wines which are produced by a winery. The world should enjoy wine, it should be delicious and precious, it should show its quality and rich flavour, it should simply be excellent. These are the main ingredients which compose success of the wine. Fashion is nothing for wine, because it lives out of time, its flavour is only driven by the pursuit of perfection, by years which make its quality, by dust, which covers the bottle to show its age and to gain respect.
Wine should be delicious; it should be made with love and care, that is why good old wine is never cheap. Wines are made today in "The New World" and "The Old World" style. Both styles characterize high quality wine, however the techniques are different and thus the tastes are not the same as well.
"The New World Style" represents boldly flavoured wines, rich and fruity, usually produced in America and Australia.
"The Old World Style" characterizes more subtle wines, complex, vinous and varied but less oak-influenced.
South African wineries have generally chosen the golden middle - a strategy which successfully combines both styles.
Neither of the brands wants to lose its costumers, that is why it comes of the paramount importance for most of the wineries to support their brands by delivering wines of high standard.
