In Sweden - Volvo car development

Added: 09/06/2005

Volvo's birthday is the 14th of April, 1927 when the first automobile lovingly named "Jacob" was produced at a little factory of Gothenburg. This was an automobile designed in American style. Only in the middle of fifties the Sweden designers came up with their own unique style. Nowadays Volvo brand includes cars, trucks, buses, building equipment, power plants for industrial usage, and aircraft engines for military and civil aviation. Still, the name of the brand is closely associated with cars, the many of us unmistakably distinguish Volvo automobiles among many others.

Sweden presented us with Swedish cuisine, the world famous band "Abba", vodka "Absolute", and well-known Volvo cars.  "The capital of Volvo" in Sweden is Gothenburg. According to the legend, long time ago two old friends were sitting in Stockholm restaurant "Sturehof" and, having had a delicious dinner, decided to organize the production of automobiles based on their own technology; they were Assar Gabrielsson, a businessman and bachelor of economics, and Gustaf Larson, an engineer and designer.  They were the fathers of the contemporary Volvo Company.

In Sweden Volvo is considered to be a universal auto as this vehicle is as comfortable for housewives as it is for businesspeople and ministers.  Volvo is competing with German, Japanese and French manufacturers and occupies leading positions in the USA, Great Britain and Germany.  The main principles of Volvo are safety and reliability, the main features of Volvo cars are rationality, comfort and universality.  These qualities of Volvo are recognized and valued all over the world.  When Volvo began to manufacture trucks, this manufacturing line was considered secondary and supplementary, but nowadays trucks are becoming the most important sphere of Volvo business, and their production is very important for the company.  Volvo heavy trucks are safe and reliable, they are predictable and controllable under difficult diving conditions, and survive severe climate conditions without any problems.

Over the years the company has overcome crises, wars, deserved and undeserved accusations, took part in numerous world exhibitions and competitions and won many prizes and awards.  In 1929 the first magazine for Volvo owners was published in Sweden, and nowadays it is the oldest popular magazine of this kind.

Swedish people are proud of Volvo and its success.  In 2004 Volvo set its record in sales by selling 456,224 automobiles.  And this year the company is going to set a new record.  The bestseller of the company is XC90.  The main Volvo production facilities are located in Gothenburg and Gent (Belgian).  Volvo also owns plants in Southern Africa, Thailand and Malaysia.

In 2004 the company presented three concept cars.  The first one, Your Concept Car (YCC), was first demonstrated in Geneva where it won instant popularity.  The second concept car is Tandem.  This electric automobile of the near future is intended for large ecologically vulnerable cities.  Living up to its name, the car has two seats situated one behind another.  The third concept car, 3CC, also environmentally safe, features the design of a sports car and excellent driving characteristics.  3CC was demonstrated in Shanghai and won five gold medals and the award for the best design.

The Volvo brand, highly respected all over the world, has been growing extensively over the years.  The year 2004 was particularly successful for the company.  Volvo Cars has won a lot of awards in 2004. In Sweden Volvo Cars was recognized as the best employer, and the corporative magazine "Agenda" was awarded a Sweden Publishing Prize set up by the company Popular Communication as the best corporative magazine.
