In Pisa Visitors Don't Just See history, They Live it!

Added: 04/17/2006

Nowadays to get to the famous Italian city and check out the Leaning Tower of Pisa, or do a little sightseeing is not a problem- international and local airlines ply regularly. Home of the famous Leaning Tower, Pisa offers a lot more than an architectural decision, it has wonderful ancient buildings that do stand erect, gorgeous scenery, and food that is well a par with that of any other international city. There are many beautiful buildings in Pisa other than the tower.

The Church, Baptistery and the famous leaning tower, promised to be stabilized and reopened to the public in the nearest future. The leaning tower, of course is the main, though not the only attraction in Pisa.  The city's  other equally notable coups include its long maritime legacy dating to 1000 BC, its prized university and its status as the birthplace of the world's greatest physicist and astronomer, Galileo Galilee. But of course the Leaning Tower plays the town-planning role. Constructed in Pisa in the beginning of the August 1173 and continued (with two long interruptions) for about two hundred years.

The layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisa's engineers for more than 800 years.  Initially it was designed to be "vertical" but started to incline during its construction.   But besides this, the Tower in Pisa can also be one of the most remarkable bell towers in the world - due to the ancient bell, hanging there.  It was in Pisa, where people also created one of the most beautiful squares in the world in the Campo die Miracoli (Field of Miracles). Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower.

It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

Other attractions of interest in Pisa include the Museo delle Sinopie, a museum containing a display of sketches from the frescoed cycle that decorated the walls of the Campo Santo cemetery. The Piazza del Duomo, to the north of the centre, has one of the most attractive architectural groupings not in Pisa only, but in the whole Italy.

The Museo dell'Opera Del Duomo, the next thing to be seen in Pisa exhibits of arabesque panels and Corinthian capitals. They reveal the influences of Rome and Islam on architects in Pisa, induced by the city being one of the maritime capitals.  The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo displays a range of Florentine art from the 12th through to the 17th centuries, so it will be interesting to see.

In Pisa, airports can be accessed by the A12 from Genova, Florence and Leghorn. Pisa airports are served by major European carriers, and shuttle services into the city are convenient and reliable, so it is very convenient to see the city now.

The tower in Pisa has made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy, but many of the tourists stay for the day and in the evening it reverts to being a pleasant Tuscan town. The excellent railway connection with Florence means it is a good base for exploring the area, including Lucca, which can be reached by bus, and Livorno - the port on the Ligurian coast.

Take the bus into town and check out the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, or do a little sightseeing. Home of the famous Leaning Tower, Pisa offers a lot more than a rather dodgy architectural decision, it has other magnificent baroque buildings that do stand erect, gorgeous scenery, and food that is well n a par with that of any other international city. There are many beautiful buildings in the city other than the tower.

With time on your hands between flights take the time to enjoy Italian cuisine in one of the two restaurants, or prime you courage with a few drinks in the bar.
