Indoor air pollution and how to fight against it

Added: 03/21/2006

Some people just smile ironically when they hear about indoor air pollution a serious problem. But it is really so - some of them even suffer from air pollution effects. The most widely spread effect that indoor air pollution has on us is allergy. Probably, it is a very familiar situation for you - cleaning your house is accompanied with sneezing. Yes, cleaning is a double edged sword. It removes unwanted pollutants from the home but can also cause the home to be polluted, particularly if products are not used correctly. Many cleaning products have chemicals that can be toxic at high doses, so it is extremely important to follow principles of good practice when using them.

We tend to think of our homes as our havens-safe places to go in order to retreat from the assault of modern life. For the most part this is true. But there is a hidden danger lurking. I mean indoor air pollution. Air pollution is a topic of interest nowadays. Most of the time, the subject brings to mind images of smog, exhaust, and other outdoor pollutants. However, an equally concerning issue pertains to the air pollution that exists inside our very homes.

Most metropolitan areas suffer from smog, car exhaust, and other pollutants that can be seen with the eye. They are many equally concerning substances that cannot be seen with the eye. Moreover, many of the most damaging microorganisms can be found indoors. They can be found in all climates and in homes of all shapes and sizes. There are several steps that homeowners should take to protect themselves from basic indoor air pollution. Good ventilators, air cleaners, and vacuuming systems can help to keep indoor environments clean, dry, and free of bacteria.

These include, for example, following instructions on the label carefully, using only as much as is needed to do the job, and properly diluting the product to the correct concentration when using concentrates. In addition, it is always a good idea to open a window in the room when possible to provide added ventilation in the space when cleaning.

Opening the window is one of the ways of fighting against indoor air pollution. But... it works only if you live in the area where there are no overloaded roads and manufactures. And what to do you do not live in such area? Look for other air purifiers. The best one from my point of view is indoor plants. Plants absorb potentially harmful gases and clean the air inside modern buildings. Besides, they are not only valuable weapons but also very nice decorations.

Thus, Philodendron, Spider Plant And The Golden Pothos are the most effective in removing formaldehyde molecules. Flowering plants such as Gerbera Daisy And Chrysanthemums are rated superior in removing benzene from the atmosphere. Other good performers are Dracaena Massangeana, Spathiphyllum, and Golden Pothos.

Those who suffer from allergy can find a relief buying an air filtering system. By ridding the air of common airborne pollutants, these filters allow people to breathe easy. Free from the fear of watery eyes and runny noses, they can enjoy peace of mind and enhanced productivity. Electrostatic air filters serve a number of other purposes. Notably, because they purify the air, they keep the environment clean and thus protect paint jobs and home furnishings. They can also remove germs and bacteria that allow flu viruses and colds to be passed from one person to the next. This multi-purpose functioning makes air filters a smart investment for any home or office space.
