Peru is the third-largest country in South America that possesses the most amazing and stunning culture and sightseeing. This country can allure you with the wonderful world of the Spanish conquistadors, the ancient Inca culture, the lost city of Machu Picchu, and the enigma of the Nazca Lines. Great amounts of visitors and tourists flock to this country that is considered to be a tourist paradise. Huge chains of hotels in Peru stretch along the Peru cost, and all over the country, creating all the necessary conditions for tourists and holiday makers. But do you know that one of the peculiarities of this country is its climate and weather?
Peru is located on the west coast of South America, bordered by the South Pacific Ocean, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. It is located in the tropics near the equator, but Peru climate and weather are not what you've expected. On Earth, you can find a total of 32 kinds of climate, and Peru has 28 of them. On a trip through Peru you might find hot deserts, dry forests, humid savannas, plain rainforests, cold plateaus, cool steppes, and icy mountains. Taking Peru climate into consideration, it's tough to pack!
Moreover, according to the international climate classification of Kippen, that establishes 11 main types of climates, Peru possesses 8. That is the reason why Peru climate is believed to be one of the most diverse in the world.
1.Semi warm and very dry climate: (desert, arid, subtropical). Average temperature is about 19°C. This climate can be observed in almost each region of the coast. The Peruvian current of cold waters transmits its coldness to the coast, and causes the absence of rains during the whole year.
2.Very dry warm climate: (desert or arid tropical). Average temperature is 24°C. The north coast of Peru has such climate. Due to the influence of the marine current of El Nino, there are strong rains among December to April, and is very dry from May to November.
3.Temperate sub-humid climate: (steppe and inter-Andean low valleys). Average temperature is 20°C, with seasonal rains. This climate is presented in the Andean area, located between 1,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level.
4.Cold or northerly climate: (Andean valleys). Average temperature is 12°C., rainy summers and dry winters with strong frosts. This climate corresponds to the Andean area, between the 3,000 and 4,000 meters above sea level.
5.Frigid climate: (tundra). Average temperature is 6°C., with very cold and dry summers. This climate is presented in the Andean area, between 4,000 and 5,000 meters above sea level.
6.Snowy climate: (gelid). Average temperature is 0°C. or less. This climate corresponds to the Andean area, from 5,000 meters above sea level or more. The big masses of snow and ice that are usually formed in the Andean high summits influence the climate of this region.
7.Very humid, semi-warm climate: (Andean oriental slope). Average temperature is 22°C, with the tendency to increase in territories of lower heights. There are permanent rains during the whole year.
8.Humid warm climate: (Amazon plain). Average temperature is 25°C., without notable differences of temperature during the whole year. This climate corresponds to the low jungle, located on the Amazon plain. During summer months, there are torrential rains.
Peru can be divided into three major regions, each having its own weather conditions:
Costa (Coast) - the 3,079 kilometre (1,900 mile) Pacific Coastline.
Sierra (Andes) - the central Andean Highlands.
Selva (Amazon Basin) - the remote eastern vastness of the Amazonian jungle.
In the Coast, Peru climate and weather vary greatly. Winters, running from June to September, are damp and cloudy. The garua (thick fog) is observed only in a radius of 50 km around Lima. On the remainder of the coast the climate is rather like the desert: there are infrequent rains and it's hot all the year round. The hottest months are from December to March. Average temperatures come in at 14°C. During the summer, temperatures can peak at 28°C or over.
In Sierra (mountains), the sun shines all year round during the day, but at night it's rather cold, the average temperature is 5°C and sometimes even below freezing. The best period to visit the mountain is the summer, from June to October, when the weather is hot - 20-25°C in the day - and nice and when the sky is clear. The rest of the year there is rain and a slight temperature drop.
The climate in the Amazon jungle (Selva) is tropical all year round. The rain season lasts from December to April and, during this period, there is heavy rainfall and high humidity. In the forest, the hottest months coincide with the rain season. The jungle has its dry season from April to October with temperatures up to 35°C.
