Impartial investigation: the voyage to Texas and Nashville in pursuit of folk spiritual roots of country music lyrics

Added: 10/25/2005

For sure many people frequently begin to think about popularity of country music. And scrutinizing a lot of materials according to this theme, i come to a conclusion that i can get to the truth only in native land of country style. So i suggest you to follow with me to magic cowboy land without of feeling sorry of our money. Fresh air of american prairies can inform us many unique intelligence.

At last there has come October. The heat has receded. The easy, cool autumn has painted in yellow and red colors grass and trees in parks and gardens. From my window it is visible as the wind bears yellow-claret and orange maple leaves by past somewhere hurrying passers. Older persons sit on shops and enjoy the pleasant autumn sun. The rain while is not present. I sit before the screen of my notebook and read the Internet Pages. Time has come in my opinion to make the promising travel to the south of the United States of America for detailed acquaintance with sources of national creativity which all becomes more popular all over the world. Certainly I mean music in style country.

To begin such fascinating adventure I decide from the state of Texas, from the city of Houston. The state of Texas is truly fanned by legends. On its ground severe wars were conducted. Indians and cowboys have glorified this land for all times. The films about their adventures, which we know as westerns have flown around the world, singing of boldness and nobleness young Americans. About adventures of desperate brave men in severe America millions teenagers become engrossed in reading of books. Texans in wide-brimmed hats, wide trousers and high boots do not descend from screens of TVs. We can recall even Chuck Norris and his rangers. Also it is necessary to notice, that practically in all films and serials about Texas perfect music in style country sounds.

I have decided to design all travel on my computer, using last achievements of the Internet. Order the tickets aboard the plane, the insurance, booking of hotels and car rental have been executed by means of electronic commerce and paid by cyber payment systems with using plastic monetary cards.

At last all preparations are completed also we'll leave. Ahead the state of Texas waits is waiting for us. In general it is very useful to know, that Texas is a state located in the South of United States of America. The 28th U.S. state, Texas joined the United States in 1845. Texas has two global cities as Houston and Dallas. Dallas hold the title of "Gamma World City" by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network. There are the five largest cities in Texas ranged by population. We can list that register:  Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth. Texas is the only state to arrange three cities with populations exceeding 1 million on it's territory (California arranges two, no other state arranges more than one). They are: Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. Also this cities are among the ten largest cities of the United States. Austin and Fort Worth are in the top 20 largest US cities.

After lasting long flight on a comfortable airliner we arrive to George Bush Intercontinental Airport. It  is twenty miles north of downtown Houston. It is settled between Interstate 45 and Highway 59, inside the Houston city confines in the Aldine area, and is neighbouring to Humble. Thera are many various flights from Bush Intercontinental to other lands of the United States, conjointly to Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. The airport is Texas' second largest air installation, after the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. It is the ninth busiest in USA for total passengers, and nineteenth busiest in the universe. It is the hub of Continental Airlines, and, because of its kinship to their hub in Dallas, American Airlines also maintains a large presence there. A long enumeration of cities inside the territory of Texas, as well as international destinations are served straightforwardly from this airport.

Due to well organized service we quickly receive the small luggage and we hurry to keep in reserve a number in hotel near to the airport.  I have chosen The Houston Airport Marriott. It is the only hotel that supplies laudatory underground train service to Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport. The Airport Marriott Hotel is situated in the center of the passenger terminal complex with 566 rooms accessible for guests. Consequently passengers are connected from terminals to the hotel's dining rooms, conference rooms, and other slants of comfortable service. The highest possible in dining pleasure is provided by a gastronome restaurant purling above the hotel tower.

Then we must rent a car using new Consolidated Rental Car Facility which opened in August, 2003 in the airport. The Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CRCF) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) combines the everish activity of nine different national rental car companies, creating a more contemporary, efficacious and environmentally-friendly system of getting air travellers to and from their rental cars.

I have decided to begin detailed acquaintance to country music with visiting The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame by rental car. The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, located in Carthage, Texas in Panola County, reverences those who have made outstanding endowments to country music and were born in the state of Texas. The Hall includes singers, songwriters, disc jockeys and other prominent figures of folk arts. Carthage is a small town with a total population of 6,664. It is the county seat of Panola County, and is settled in East Texas. Panola County is situated in Texas and it's population average nearly 22,756. Panola County is designated for a Native American word for cotton. In Carthage there is the main campus of Panola College.

Travelling on boundless dusty roads, from a window of the car it is possible to enjoy perfect natural landscapes of this district. Majestic mountain ridges on a background of the blue sky with freakish clouds will force to conceal breath and to suspend traveling for any townsfolk. Stopping in roadside motels, it is possible to meet with culture of Texas, customs, and certainly with a folk music and songs on the own experience.

Then after a long cognitive road trip I at last have reached my destination. A museum in Carthage is a big multi-purpose room, and a gift shop include the principal regions of interest inside the facility. The multi-purpose room can be transmuted into a lecture hall or a dining room. The museum accommodates informational panels that cover each conscript 's career and attainments through text, photographs, and artifacts. In the center of the exhibit area, a reproduction of a 1930's theater marquee reminds visitors of the role of country music in film. The marquee also is the admittance to the Tex Ritter museum. Ritter was born in Panola County. He was one of the first singers who was inducted into the hall when it was founded in 1998.

Among great amount of celebrities present at this sacred for admirers of country music place my attention is involved with the native of Texas which name is Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr. Jiles was born on october 24, and died in 1930 - February 3, 1959. He was better known as The Big Bopper. He was a disc jockey and an early rock and roll star with great voice, who parlayed abundant personality into a career. He is famous for his composition "Chantilly Lace". He was born in Sabine Pass, Texas. Harold "Pappy" Dailey from Houston launched Richardson as a recording artist. Dailey fulfiled chargse of promotion director for "Mercury records" and signified Richardson to "Mercury". Richardson's first song "Beggar To A King" had a country flavor, but failed to profit any chart action. He soon incised "Chantilly Lace" as "The Big Bopper" for Pappy Dailey's D label. "Mercury" purchased the masterpiece and released it during the summer of 1958. It obtained 16 on the pop charts and located 22 weeks on the national "Top 40".

So staying in Carthage I gradually absorbed fundamental ideas of country music, I begin to understand better for what this music is necessary. I learn more about musicians and composers, having familiarized with their country music lyrics.

For example,  native of Texas Martina McBride (born Martina Mariea Schiff, July 29, 1966 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas), is a very successful American country music singer. Martina Schiff grew up on a dairy farm outside of Sharon, Kansas. She played with her parents' band "The Schiffters" as a child. On May 15, 1988 she was married to sound engineer John McBride. She and her husband then moved to Nashville where they both took jobs touring with Garth Brooks. Ultimately she could strike a bargain with RCA Records. Martina McBride published her debut honky tonk-flavored album "The Time Has Come" in 1992. Her first great hit was the song "My Baby Loves Me" from her more pop-oriented second album "The Way That I Am" in 1993. She became more conspicuous in 1994 with success of her anti-domestic violence hymn "Independence Day".

In 1995 McBride promulgated the album "Wild Angels". Two compositions "Safe in the Arms of Love" and the title track became great country hits. Her album "Evolution" was extended all over the world more than two million discs in 1997. That album comprehended an adult contemporary crossover hit in "Valentine", which became a famous country hymn. The album "Emotion" was promoted in 1999. The song "I Love You" from that album was a big hit in both country and adult contemporary circles. Then Martina succeeded to create the socially deliberate single "Love's the Only House", a course that would continue with "This One's for the Girls" in 2003, which would become the topic song for the NCAA Women's Basketball championship tournament in 2005 year. This direction was followed by such songs as "How Far" and "God's Will".

As of 2005 McBride is generally accepted one of the top female country singers, with her strong and pure soprano voice she has been marked "Celine Dion of country music." She has significant service record: four time Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year winner, three time Academy of Country Music Female Vocalist of the Year winner and a Grammy Award winner. She executed The Star-Spangled Banner at Game 3 of the 2004 World Series. McBride earned additional visibility during the 2005 season of American Idol. Carrie Underwood proclaimed McBride to be her favorite singer, as definitive winner, performing several of her hits in the contest and putting "Independence Day" on her first single.

I managed to familiarize with country music lyrics of her many compositions. So in the songs "Safe In The Arms Of Love" and "In My Daughter's Eyes" I find such phrases:

My heart's not ready for the rocking chair
I need somebody who really cares
So tired of livin' solitare
Someday I'm gonna be
Safe in the arms of love

Strip your heart and it starts to snow
Love is a high-wire act I know
Someday I'll find a net below

And ....

In my daughter's eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light and the
world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me gives me
strength when I am weak
I find reason to believe
In my daughter's eyes

Simple words clearly and intelligibly to listeners present feelings, experiences, dreams of the person. The listener as though itself appears on a place of heroes of songs. It seems, that all about what is sung in a song occurs personally to you. It would be desirable to you to listen such country music lyrics many times, to learn its by heart and to sing in difficult minutes. The song comes to the aid, helps to get out of inconvenient position, gives advice how to live further.

Well and it is time to us to come back to Houston, we are waited with flight to Nashville. And here I again go to George Bush Intercontinental airport. I direct my steps to Terminal B. In fact to me  to fly with Continental Express.

The operating name of ExpressJet for Continental Airlines is Continental Express. ExpressJet is no longer a completely owned secondary of Continental Airlines, and they manage an all regional jet fleet. Continental Express employed to fly turbo-props.

We rise up in the air. We are waiting for a lot of surprising impressions in musical city.

Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located on the Cumberland River in Davidson County in the central part of the state. Its nickname is "Music City, U.S.A.". Nashville is the permanent address of the Grand Ole Opry, and many principal record labels. The population of Nashville is nearly 569,891. It is the second largest city in Tennessee (below Memphis).

Nashville International Airport ( BNA, KBNA) is an airport in southeastern Nashville. The IATA Airport Code BNA is declined from Berry Field in Nashville that is one of the city's early aviation facilities. There are 4 runways in the airport.  Historically Nashville International Airport was an American Airlines hub from the late 1980. Today in 2005, the airport is a Southwest Airlines hub, and is served by 17 airlines operating 415 average diurnal flights.

To stay on lodging for the night I have chosen with the help of Internet SUPER 8 MOTEL - NASHVILLE/ARPT/MUSIC CITY Area 720 Royal Parkway, Nashville, TN  37214, US 885-7000. There are 105 units, interior corridor, indoor pool and Jacuzzi, Fax & copy service available, complimentary Airport transportation call property for availability, complimentary SuperStart Breakfast (bagels, muffins, toast, juice), easy access from all major interstates, restaurants (fast food and dine in) nearby (Ruby Tuesday, Don Chiles Mexican Restaurant,  Darfons Seafood Restaurant and Lounge).

I rent a car with "Avis - company" and quickly go to the music city towards to new impressions.

Many popular tourist locations engage western country music, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Ryman Auditorium, which was for many years the place of the Grand Ole Opry. Each year, the Country Music Association's Fan Fair (which was given a new name "CMA Music Festival" in 2003) attracts many thousands of music-lovers to the city. The Country Music Hall of Fame is a museum at 222 Fifth Avenue South in Nashville. Its assignment is to document the chronicle of country music and to reverence its principal leaders. The Ryman Auditorium (the "Mother Church of Country Music") is a live accomplishment venue located at 116 Fifth Avenue North in Nashville, Tennessee, and is best-known as the one-time home of the Grand Ole Opry.

The auditorium began to work as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892. It was created by a riverboat captain and Nashville businessman, whose name was Thomas Ryman (1843-1904). The Tabernacle was renamed to Ryman Auditorium in Thomas's honor, after his death.

From 1943 till 1974 the Opry built a larger venue just outside Nashville and it was enabled for Grand Ole Opry broadcasts. Then the Ryman sat disengaged for the most part. But in 1994 it was restored and reopened as a performance venue and museum.

Many famous singers and writers of country western music have performed at the Ryman over the years, including Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Ernest Tubb, Dottie West, Hank Williams, and Tammy Wynette.

The Ryman Auditorium was designated National Historic Landmark No. 71000819 and contained in the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 year.

The Ryman Auditorium was called Pollstar Magazine's National Theatre of the Year for 2003 and 2004 years, flagellating out such pillars as New York's Radio City Music Hall and Hollywood's Universal Amphitheater.

The CMA Music Festival is counted more than three decades of tradition. The festival was born in 1972 as Fan Fair. From that occasion country music-lovers from all nooks of our planet have poured into Nashville, to contemplate their favorite artists perform, to get that desired autograph and to create lifelong memories.

CMA Music Festival (or Fan Fair) is unequalled among music festivals. It is a four-day celebration of America's country music. That arrangement features artist or fan coordination, photo opportunities, autograph signings, more than 45 hours of concerts, family activities and much more.

Each year, hundreds of artists and celebrities participate in CMA Music Festival - from rising stars, to current legends. CMA Music Festival is a genuine stomping ground for music fans, who are very fond of making music and country-lovers who are fond of hearing it simultaneously.

This world-class event presented annually by the Country Music Association and regularly involves more than 130,000 fans from many countries. This action raises profits for charities designated by the participating artists through CMA's "Cause For Celebration!" campaign.

So gradually I have met with history of country music in this city, communicated with people who finance folk festivals, listened to music, studied country music lyrics of different authors. It was especially remembered Alison Krauss.

 Lucky One, The
you're the lucky one
so i've been told
as free as the wind,
blowin' down the road
loved by many, hated by none
i'd say you're lucky 'cause I know what you've done
not a care in the world
not a worry in sight
everything's gunna be alright
cause you're the lucky one...

            Bright Sunny South
From the bright sunny south to the war, I was sent,
E'er the days of my boyhood, I scarcely had spent.
From it's cool shady forests and deep flowing streams,
Ever fond in my mem'ry and sweet in my dreams.
Oh, my dear little sister, I still see her tears.
When I had to leave home in our tender years.
And my sweet gentle mother, so dear to my heart,
It grieved me sincerely when we had to part...

And again I am ready to repeat over and over again these words, again it seems to me, that I have found a medicine for all troubles and I have nothing to be afraid more.

I left America in high spirits. I unravel the secret of country music. Seems to me my journey passed knowingly. According to my opinion authors of songs of country music create its on the basis of their life experience, trying to represent that they see around of them. Their heroes are simple people who can be met often in our life. All about what sing in songs can happen with me and you. It is really the national genre which serves people, helps youth to find a correct way fortunately, struggles with difficulties. This music attends with us both in sorrow and in pleasure.

Good-bye with best regards dear readers, and let's listen country western music...
