The first season of the Starting Over TV show was set in Chicago in 2003-2004, featuring life coaches Rana Walker and Rhonda Britten. During its second season the Show was moved from Chicago to the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles with a more secluded and larger house. The second life coach Rana Walker was replaced by Iyanla Vanzant, and Dr. Stan Katz was invited as the psychologist. The Starting Over TV show was produced by the reality TV producer Murray Productions, responsible for a number of other reality shows, like the Real World, Road Rules, Making the Band, the Simple Love, and Love Cruise. Owing to the large production budget, as well as major innovations, the style of the second seasons differed much from that of the first, which was criticized by many for being overly dramatized.
The third season of the show was filmed in Reseda, not far from Los Angeles. It was the first time that men appeared on the show to work on their issues. During the first several weeks of this season, which aired from 2005 till 2006, the couples had to work with the life coaches, who helped them learn tools, necessary to improve their relations. The life coach Rana Walker, who starred during the first season, was responsible for providing the women with effective guidance, which would deliver great results. Such a holistic approach embodied the physical, spiritual, and mental well being of each woman on the show. Rana's life coaching system aimed at issuing a challenge through such intense activities as hiking, horseback riding and whitewater rafting, which demonstrated an almost immediate improvement of mental, spiritual and physical wellness of the participants. Rana Walker has fifteen years experience in creating well-being venues for other people, and has facilitated numerous workshops abroad. Rich experience and extensive overseas travel provided the ground for her success as a life coach and entrepreneur.
In 2005, the Starting Over TV Show won an Emmy at the 32nd Daytime Emmy Awards, in the category, Outstanding Special Class Series. Also nominated for Emmy, in the category Multi-Camera Edition, were the editors of the show, including Arek Hope, Marc Grossman, Raul Rosenberg, Mara Vitakis and Joe Shugart. The third season was again nominated for the 2006 Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Series. Following its notable achievement, the Starting Over TV show becomes the fifth reality show to win the Best Series Emmy. By this Award, it joined such winners as Survivor, awarded in 2000 for Outstanding Special Class Program; the Osbournes for Outstanding Nonfiction Program; the Amazing Race for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program; and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy for Outstanding Reality Program.
Renovated for its third season, Starting Over is a business show, syndicated by NBC Universal Television Distribution with the majority stations airing it being NBC affiliates. The company's Executive Vice President, Frederick Huntsberry, expressed the station's commitment to improve the series in over 35 local markets for the next season.
