How would you like to eat squid ? dead or still alive?

Added: 11/04/2005

Our life is full of extremes, and it seems that the more we live, the more sophisticated human extremes become. This point highly concerns our eating habits. Centuries ago, humans started eating prepared food, fried in the fire or something like that, and, probably, they did not even consider that the inhabitants of the industrial society would come back to eating fresh meat and fish. Some people enjoy eating fresh frogs and worms; the others prefer eating fresh squids. The sight is unimaginable, like the very things they eat.

Squids comprise a large and diverse group of marine cephalopods, which are popular as food in Korea and Italy. Japan, Taiwan and South Korea eat squid so much that it begins to disappear in their coastal waters; due to this reason, they send their large vessels further to the North Pacific Ocean, continuing destructing many natural habitats. For instance, in 1990, Japanese vessels alone caught almost eight million squid.
In many European countries, people can eat squid only in the most privileged seafood restaurants. In the restaurants of the English-speaking countries, it is primarily known and served under the name of calamari, which is a Greek-Italian word for these species. Even though ugly and unpleasant in its appearance, squid is considered a very tasty seafood delicacy, having juicy meat and a bright, deep taste, no matter which method is applied to prepare it. Each recipe is unique and reflects this or that shade of taste and flavor. You can eat squid fried, grilled, baked or barbecued; squid is used for salads and the sauces' preparation; and each recipe presupposes a diverse spices' usage and various vegetables. Probably, the major thing about all squid recipes is that these are hot and spicy dishes.
One more method is to eat squid alive. What a prodigious performance it is! Nevertheless, it is a well-spread phenomenon not only in Asian countries, but also in the USA. If you would like to change your eating habits or to conduct the experiment, whether you can do it, go to the Prince Restaurant in Los Angeles. The Prince is an especial restaurant, and the word "especial" does not even express the sense, comprising the restaurant's concept. The primary peculiarity of the Prince lies in its menu, containing a couple of secret items known only for those, who speak and read the Korean language. These ciphered menu items conceal an extraordinary offer of the restaurant for those, who would like to experience eating live squid. If you order it, the sight of this terrible and at the same time a sublime creature will impress you first. Squid moves its tentacles, trying to grab everything around, not having a slightest idea that it is going to be eaten. Perhaps, it presupposes that all these dishes are for it and is intending to have a good dinner and play with you after it.
Experimenters say they come across difficulties, when eating squid tentacles, as it takes not one effort to catch these sticking to plates, dishes and sauces, numerous evading "legs".
Then, if eventually entering your mouth, the tentacles will continue struggling inside, suctioning on to your teeth, tongue and bottom lip, making it impossible to eat. Needless to say, your dinner will try to preserve its life until it has no more efforts to fight. You can imagine on your own the final of this burning performance.
In fact, some live squid eaters say that it is the most terrible, meanest, tasteless and rudest meals in their life. The reason for experiencing eating live animals is only a desire to feel a victim, clashed by your teeth, like a lion enjoys its prey's struggle. Rather odd desires occur to people in our all around innovated, civilized and industrial society. As if we have nothing to eat any more.
