With the development of mass media - the internet, DVD's, electronic games and the like - there was a lot of perceived anxiety that books would become out-of-date. A thing of the past. Fortunately, this has not come to pass. Oddly enough, the sales of book have increased just as television continues to evolve. A study has determined that the United States ranks first in terms of books being published monthly and yearly. Subject matter varies from the latest best-sellers to biographies and historical novels, to manuals on gardening, to cook books to technical and scientific journals and encyclopedias.
There are several reasons for this. First of all, a love for reading has been instilled in children attending American schools from the first stages of their studying. Secondly, public libraries have very active positions all over the country. Easy availability of books among the population was and still remains a traditional policy. Thousand of books are donated by communities to be used as fundraisers by small and medium libraries. The third and the most important feature is that there are no laws in the United States restricting book trade. Every one has a right to sell a new or second-hand book at reduced prices or at agreed prices.
Books have traditionally been sold at a variety of locations: at drugstores, supermarkets, manufactured goods shops, twenty-four-hour shops, in addition to being distributed and sold through a book club. There are a lot of bookstores which have been established at universities and are managed by the students. There are also a wide net of such entities referred to as a quality paperback book club in which paperback book lovers gather for reading and discussion.
A book club is a type of a small society which is also very popular in the states. As a rule, a book club is established not only at universities or colleges, but in supermarkets also. This makes also contributes to the development of the book trade. A book club can come in different types: for example, a Disney book club or a Barbie-lovers book club.
Speaking about a Disney book club, one should say that this series includes very nice books, perfectly illustrated which recount new and classic adventures for our children using traditional Disney characters. The books are published exclusively for book club members and are sent to members via the mail. Such books are not sold through bookstores.
Disney books are a perfect present for any child. Being a member of a book club means one can order whichever book he or she wishes, in addition to receiving extra presents from the club management on birthdays, Christmas or other holidays. Such are the rules in many book clubs: to make presents for the club members.
A short excursus to the history of the matter: as American experts stated, book clubs and later book distribution and trade through parcel post service is one of the reasons for a book's popularity, while at the same time providing the population living in rural locations with the most popular best-sellers and latest publications in different fields of knowledge.
