Holidays in Lefkas - Offering You Gorgeous Beaches, Marvelous Climate and Beautiful Greek Villages

Added: 06/12/2006

Located in the Ionian Sea, the island of Lefkas is a mountainous land with extended coasts, verdant hills, impressive countryside and hospitable locals that will show you why holidays in Lefkas are considered to be among the best-spent holidays in Greece. The beautiful island of Lefkas lies close to the mainland and is connected by a tunnel, making the short transfers even more convenient.

Lefkas, also known as Lefkada, is an island. Once joined to the mainland, the Corinthians dug a canal in the 6th century BC.  Now a swing-bridge links the two again, which means that on Lefkas you have all the benefits of an island atmosphere together with access to some of the most beautiful parts of western Greece.

Lefkas nestles away in the center of the main Ionian Islands. Holidays in Lefkas and the surrounding area have a lot to offer - anything from
sailing, windsurfing, cycling, scuba-diving, walking, exploring ancient archaeological sites or just that lazy beach holiday. You will probably
find some of the most picturesque views around, looking out from the calmer waters of the east coast overlooking the famous Onassis island of Scorpios and in contrast on the west coast you will find the best beaches and most spectacular sunsets.

One unique characteristic of Lefkada Town, the capital of the island, is the artificial canal that separates it from the mainland and the two
bridges that connect it, providing easy access to and from this popular resort. On your holidays in Lefkas and in the beautiful town of Lefkada you will find some of the most important sightseeing on the island.  Sights such as the ruins of the ancient town of Lefkada, the impressive castle next to the artificial canal and the famous park of Bosketo that includes a collection of busts of renowned poets and other artists of Lefkada provide a magical atmosphere.

One should also pay a visit to the lovely churches and monasteries, the old houses and villas, the archaeological and cultural museums, the
municipal and the Haramoglios libraries, the museum of the phonographs located in Lefkada Town.

Explore the charming settlements of Lefkada and experience its hospitality and diversity. If you are looking for cosmopolitan nightlife, visit Nydri, the most popular tourist resort on the island, located along the beach, in the heart of a verdant plain. The numerous isles such as Prigiponissa, Madouri, Heloni, Skorpios, Sparti, Skorpidi as well as the leeward bay of Vlyho and the verdant cape of Agia Kyriaki create unique scenery.

On your holidays in Lefkas you should also visit Vassiliki, a lively and scenic village on the southern side of the island, Agios Nikitas, a traditional "preserved" settlement with olive groves, Nikiana, a developing coastal village and of course Syvota, a small settlement with an anchorage, built on a fjord, which is ideal if you have a boat.

The most frequented area of the island, Lefkada Town is full of taverns, restaurants, bars, clubs and other entertainment venues, as well as
hotels, hotel apartments, studios, rented rooms and villas. If you would prefer quieter holidays in Lefkas away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist resorts, you should visit Athani, a mountainous village, famous for its production of honey, or Vlyho, a small coastal village built on a sheltered bay.

Most tour operators offer flights for individual holidays as well as fully inclusive holidays to Lefkas. All local facilities can be booked
through the many tourist agencies on the island. Lefkas is a very friendly island and there is always somebody at hand to offer help or
information.
