Holidays in Halkidiki - A Rather Special Place to Visit in Greece

Added: 06/09/2006

Halkidiki is one of the most beautiful regions in Northern Greece. The Halkidiki Peninsula, often referred to as "squid-shaped" because of the three land strips that point out into the sea, offers visitors a fine selection of beaches. Making up the East of Macedonia and the West of Thrace, Halkidiki is a wonderful combination of blue sea and a stunning peninsula. Holidays in Halkidiki are among the most magnificent you will find anywhere.

The Halkidiki Peninsula in Greece has some outstanding beaches making it one of best-kept secrets in Greece.  Spending holidays in Halkidiki has become very popular thanks to the unusual three pronged peninsular of Halkidiki that points out in to clear waters of the northeast Aegean Sea, providing unique and spectacular views and landscapes. Halkidiki has 500 kilometers of beautiful coastline featuring beaches, pine covered hills and terracotta-roofed villages to explore.

Sunny, golden sandy beaches, deep and picturesque gulfs, traditional villages and modern tourist resorts, small islands and sheltered bays,
pine-clad hills descending to the sea, Mediterranean climate and magnificent natural beauty compose the picture of today's Halkidiki. The capital of Halkidiki is Poligiros, located in the center of Halkidiki.

Transportation is made mainly by car or by bus and the closest airport is "Airport Macedonia", near the city of Thessaloniki. Rarely crowded and remarkably unspoiled Halkidiki successfully balances the requirements of its visitors.

The three "land strips" of "Kassandra", "Sithonia" and "Mount Athos" make up the Halkidiki Peninsula, and each one offers great holidays in Halkidiki, with a variety of things to do and to see.  Most of the tourists come to spend their holidays in Halkidiki on the most westerly
peninsula, Kassandra. The sand and shingle beaches run down the length of the peninsula bordering the crystal clear gulfs of the Aegean. The middle finger, Sithonia, remains largely undeveloped with beautiful sandy coves and mountainous countryside.

There are many areas of historic interest in Halkidiki. If you decide to spend your holidays in Halkidiki, you should visit the mysterious
mountain monasteries at Mount Athos; take a day trip to Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city; or relax in the old world atmosphere at
Ouranoupolis. The markets at Halkidiki Town and Thessaloniki offer the best selections of local arts and crafts, religious icons and jewelry.
Halkidiki provides fairly laid-back varied nightlife, with numerous taverns and bars, and also several outdoor discotheques. Hainoti and Kalithea boast a good selection of music bars and cafes. There's a casino at Neos Marmaras but mainly the nightlife is friendly and tends to be based around the hotels in Halkidiki.

The seafood in Halkidiki is fresh and varied or experiment with the local dishes of pastitsio and souvlaki. You should also research the local
wines from Mount Athos.

No matter where you go, Halkidiki cannot fail to please you. Throughout, an effort has been made to develop tourist facilities that are in
keeping with the natural surroundings. Most of the hotels and private homes in the area are built in the traditional Macedonian style, designed to enhance rather then detract from the environment. Resorts and hotels in Halkidiki are mostly situated on sandy beaches and offer a good standard of Greek accommodation. In planning for tourism, the people of Halkidiki have tried to make their resorts as appealing and as ecologically sound as possible.

Halkidiki offers something for everybody. Many Greek nationals choose to spend holidays in Halkidiki, which suggests that it is a rather
special place for a holiday in Greece.
