A hamburger is a variant of a sandwich, involving meat (primarily ground beef), which can be fried, grilled, steamed or boiled, and is served with various additions, such as lettuce and onions. Although the motherland of hamburgers is Hamburg, Germany, they have gained so much popularity and innovation in other countries, and particularly, in the USA; people already recognize hamburgers not only as their favorite snack options but as their own traditional dish.
Moreover, a number of states in the USA claim to be the inventors of modern hamburgers, including Wisconsin, Connecticut and Hamburg (USA).
Certainly, the USA has played the major role in the development and popularity of the modern fast food hamburger with the Ray Kroc's opening of the first McDonald's franchise in the mid-1950s, which is today an enormous network of fast food restaurants all over the world. The Mc Donald's Big Mac is both the world's best selling and the most preferred by customers. The other famous fast-food chains are Burger King, Whataburger, Carl's Jr., Wendy's, Jack-In-The-Box, White Castle, In-N-Out Burger and Sonic. The "restaurant-style" varieties of hamburgers are offered in the restaurants of the Fuddruckers hamburger chain.
Some people think that the main component of a hamburger is "ham", as it appears in the name of hamburger, but as it has been mentioned above, the name refers to the town of Hamburg, and a true hamburger will never contain ham or any other pork type. The meet of a hamburger is primarily beef, although it also contains spices and other ingredients.
However, new types of hamburgers, in which the alternatives to beef are used, gain more popularity today. These new varieties include a turkey burger with ground turkey meat, a chicken burger with either ground chicken meat or chicken fillets, a buffalo burger with ground meat from a bison, an ostrich burger with ground ostrich meat, and a veggie burger or tofu burger with a meat substitute (such as tofu, TVP, seitan, or an addition of vegetables, ground up and mashed into patties). These other types of burgers are generally lower in fat or calories than the traditional hamburgers.
Along with the growth of the hamburger popularity and varieties, the fast-food restaurants continue to open, offering not only hamburgers, but also hot dogs, chili dogs, corn dogs, various drinks, salads and ice-cream for those, who want to have a good nutritious lunch or dinner. Today's fast food restaurant is a comfortable place to relax over nutritious and properly prepared meals. Moreover, hamburgers along with hot dog varieties are school lunch "major courses", and some children like these sandwiches more than any other food they are offered.
However, the nutrition experts still argue about the benefits of fast food, particularly, whether hamburgers and other sandwiches of the same type are harmful to our organism. Nevertheless, people still prefer the nutritious sandwiches to vegetables and fruit that are more useful, as when the matter concerns eating, we think more about a taste than about a benefit.
