Grand Turk - the Fascinating Capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands

Added: 04/27/2006

Comprised of two groups of tropical islands located in the Caribbean, the Turks and Caicos Islands are the UK's overseas territory, situated some 575 miles southeast of Miami. The islands' capital, Grand Turk is home to some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world that make it an ideal destination for those looking for a wonderful vacation, romantic getaway or great recreation and relaxation among others.

The capital city of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Grand Turk has been previously known as the business, financial and transportation hub of the nation until it has lost this position to Provo. Today it is recognized as a real bargain destination that also enjoys great popularity with snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Visitors come to Grand Turk to enjoy swimming, diving and relaxing under the hot sun.

Among other activities available here are horseback riding, bird watching, heritage walks, and golf. Treasure hunters and art connoisseurs should consider a visit to Turks and Caicos National Museum, the only museum within the country. It occupies Guinep House - a 150-year-old building, constructed originally by Bermudan wreckers. Today more than half of museum's displays are devoted to the remains one of the most complete archeological excavations, occurring ever in the West Indies. Some of the museum's collections feature exhibits associated with the salt industries, natural history and plantation economy of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Visitors eager to explore the both islands may take advantage of diverse lodging options Grand Turk has to offer, from rustic bed and breakfast inns to international style accommodations. Some of the most attractive options include Island House, Osprey Beach Hotel, the Arches of Grand Turk Island, the Salt Raker Inn and Turks Head Mansion just to name a few.

Nestled on a breezy site overlooking the North Creek, Island House is designed in the architectural style that evokes the Mediterranean, with guest rooms and suites opening onto spectacular water views. Both one-bedroom suites and studios feature balconies overlooking lush green gardens and water, kitchens and bathrooms with a tub-shower combination. The guests' favorite spot is a pool, ideal for relaxation. Because Island House is located only minutes from fantastic reefs and wall of the island, it enjoys wide popularity with divers. Such activities as scuba diving, fishing, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing are available as well.

One of the family favorite resorts, Osprey Beach Hotel is famous for its beautiful white sand beach offering excellent snorkeling and swimming. Guest rooms occupy two-storey houses, each equipped with a kitchenette and verandah with the sea view. Upper floor rooms are more spacious and feature ceilings crafted from varnished pine. The older wing of the hotel is home to the Courtyard Cafe open for breakfast and lunch, and Osprey Pool Bar, quite suitable for dinner.

Those looking for a deluxe way of living in Grand Turk may consider the Arches of Grand Turk Island, a luxurious hotel set atop the North Ridge of the island. Here you'll be offered nice two-storey units, each featuring two bedrooms, balconies with island or ocean views, and bathrooms with shower-tub combinations. The complex is extremely popular with couples and families, as well as larger groups of travelers who come here to experience great adventure.

Commonly known as the Garden Island, North Caicos is recognized as one of the largest islands in Turks and Caicos Chain, occupying the territory of 41 square miles and home to more than 1,500 people.
