Created with the aim of advancing economic knowledge throughout the region, the Canada Economics Association convenes an annual conference and published the most famous economics journal in the country - the Canadian Journal of Economics. This journal has its roots in the Contributions to Canadian Economics journal, which started publications in 1928, and was replaced by the Canadian Journal of Economics and Political Science in 1935.
In 1968 it was divided into two parts, namely the Canadian Journal of Political Science and the Canadian Journal of Economics. Currently the CJE strives to maintain its position as the leading economics journal in Canada, as well as a major internationally recognized edition. Affiliated with the organization is also the Canadian Public Policy journal, with CEA being among supporting organizations.
The structural organization and operation of the Canada Economics Association is governed by its constitution. A list of past and current presidents and journal editors among others recognized all those who have made contributions to CEA since its establishment in 1966. Membership in the Canada Economics Association is generally established through subscription to the Canadian Journal of Economics. Organizations and individuals interested in CEA membership should address the Blackwell Publishing web site, providing details on the subscription to the CJE. Members can also use CEA online payment system.
The meetings of the Canada Economics Association are held annually during the last week of May - first week of June. Members eager to present the results of their research at the conference should submit papers to the conference organizer. To become a participant of the conference, registration and its payment is generally required. The Association is grateful to 643 participants of the meeting held in Hamilton, Ontario, in 2005. It was organized by Professor of Queen's University, Gregor Smith, who serves currently as president of the Canada Economics Association.
The 40th annual CEA conference will take place in Concordia University in Montreal in May 26-28, 2006.
Offered by the Canada Economics Association are the following awards: the Rae Prize, Dough Purvis Memorial Prize, the Harry Johnson Prize, Robert Mundell Prize and the John Vanderkamp Prize. The Rae Prize is awarded every two years to the Canadian economist who has conducted the best research during the last five years. This prize has a value of $10,000. Dough Purvis Memorial Prize is awarded annually for a work of excellence related to Canada economic policy.
The award is available to all forms of written media, including articles in magazines and newspapers, scholarly journals and other official documents. The Harry Johnson Prize is awarded annually to the author of the best paper published in the Canadian Journal of Economics. It is generally awarded at the CEA annual meeting by a committee of three. Recently CEA introduced the Robert Mundell Prize to young authors, whose papers are considered to be the best in the CJE in the previous calendar year.
Awarded annually by the Canadian Public Policy is the Vanderkamp Prize for the best paper in the preceding year.
