The idea of selling frozen ice-cream cones had long been a dream of ice-cream makers, but it wasn't until 1959 that Spica, an Italian ice-cream manufacturer based in Naples conquered the problem of the ice-cream making the cone go soggy. Spica invented a process where the inside of the waffle cone was insulated from the ice-cream by a layer of oil, sugar and chocolate. Spica registered the name Cornetto in 1960. Initial sales were poor, but in 1976 Unilever bought out Spica and began a mass-marketing campaign throughout Europe. It is now one of the most popular ice creams in the world.
Unilever is one of the world's leading suppliers of fast-moving consumer goods. Every day, around the world, people reach for Unilever products. The brands are trusted everywhere and, by listening to the people who buy them, they've grown into one of the world's most successful consumer goods companies. In fact, 150 million times a day, someone somewhere chooses a Unilever product.
Cornetto ice cream is a branded frozen ice-cream cone, manufactured by Unilever and marketed throughout the world under various different company names, but with the same Heartbrand logo. It is most familiar to British consumers as Walls' Cornetto. From the moment Cornetto ice cream was launched back in 1964, people have loved the delicious contrast of smooth ice cream topped with nuts and chocolate pieces.
Cornetto ice cream made a number of appearances in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s but it was during a heat wave in the summer of 1976 that it really took off. Of course, a certain advertising campaign featuring a gondolier singing the famous theme tune 'Just one Cornetto' also helped. The product is available in a variety of flavors including Strawberry, Mint Chocolate and Nut, whilst previous flavors have included Rum and Raisin in the 1980s. Launched in 1976, Cornetto strawberry is still the 2nd best selling hand-held ice cream today. In 2002, the Cornetto soft ice cream had one of the fastest and biggest successes in Europe, winning a place as a finalist at the 11th Annual Foods Awards Ceremony in Rotterdam.
In 2004 the Cornetto team presented Cornetto Love Potions, a limited edition range of six exotic cones in exciting flavor combinations such as tiramisu and cinnamon, cappuccino and Irish Cream and choc chip and hazelnut. For those who are really passionate about ice cream Cornetto Passion is perfect - another delicious crisp Cornetto ice cream in cone, filled with chocolate mousse, topped with delicate pannacotta ice cream swirled with a caramel sauce and fudge chunks.
Staying with ice cream, the Cornetto cone ice cream brand is reformatting into a sandwich version. New for the South African summer, Unilever Company Ola has introduced Cornetto San'wich, chocolate ice cream in a soft biscuit sandwich. This move represents a real extension innovation for the Cornetto brand, although Mintel has already spotted some other non-cone formats in Asia, such as Cornetto branded pot ice cream.
No matter where in the world you are, Cornetto ice cream is calling your name!
