Today Germany is recognized as coffee roasters' El Dorado, with over 150 liters of coffee being consumed by each of the citizens annually, while average annual consumption of tea totals only 26 liters. Nevertheless, tea has managed to establish itself as one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverages. Total green and black tea consumption rose from nearly 18.5 tons as of 2003 to more than 18.5 tons in 2004, which is a 1% increase in the market.
