In 1773 East India Company was on the verge of bankruptcy, sitting on more than seventeen million pounds of tea that it couldn't sell in England. Trying to save the company, British government passed the Tea Act in 1773 that enabled the company to export merchandise to the colonies, without paying regular taxes imposed on colonial merchants. Taking advantage of these privileges, the East India Company could easily monopolize the colonial tea trade. The ensuing tea party that followed was a result of rebelling against this monopoly.
