Florida State Universities Make Significant Quota of the Total Number of Florida Institutions of Higher EducationThe State University System of Florida now includes eleven Florida state universities: Florida A&M University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, New College of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of South Florida, University of North Florida and the University of West Florida. One of the most prominent of these is the Florida State University, located in Tallahassee.
Founded in 1851 as a comprehensive national research institution, the University has expanded to include 17 colleges and departments, which offers over 300 programs. The University is famous for its programs in Information Studies, Business, Creative Writing, Evolutionary Biology and Meteorology. Today, Florida State University is seen as a leading institution of higher education, offering undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. According to the U.S. News & World Report of Best Colleges, it ranked 51st and 109th, nationwide and worldwide, respectively. The University's Colleges of Law, Business and Hospitality constantly ranks highest in the list of Florida state universities. The School of Theatre offers one of the leading training programs for theatre in the nation and is included in the top 10. It is a founding member of the University Theatre Association. The traditional colors of the University are gold and garnet, which were used first in the Florida State University uniform in 1947.
The Florida International University, commonly known as FIU, is another one of the eleven Florida state universities. It is widely reputed for its international business, creative writing, information management, and hospitality management systems. In 2000, the Carnegie Foundation conferred upon the University the highest research university ranking for the advancement of teaching. The same year the University was awarded for having the oldest and the most renowned academic honor society, the Phi Beta Kappa.
Today, it is among 78 U.S. universities which hold both nominations. The U.S. News & World Report ranked the university among the top 100 state national universities. In 1995, it was named one of the top 10 public commuter colleges in the nation. Among the famous alumni of the institution are Liz Balmaseda, Pulitzer Prize winner; Richard Blanco, Cuban-American poet; Gerald Grant, vice president of AXA Advisors; and Carlos Arrovo and Raja Bell, both of which were NBA basketball players.
Established in 1963 as a private college for talented students, the New College of Florida became part of the University of South Florida in 1975. Upon gaining its independence in 2001, the College became the eleventh school in the system of the Florida state universities. It is located in the city of Sarasota. It differs essentially from other Florida public universities in that its curriculum was developed by the faculty and students. The student enrollment of the college is relatively small - having only about 700 students; a large number of its graduates, however, go on to the leading graduate schools.
