Charlie Nagreen tried to sell fried meatballs at the Outagamie County fair, but customers found them hard to eat while walking around the fair, so Nagreen flattened it and made it into a sandwich he called the "hamburger" in 1885. But Hamburg, Germany is recognized as the homeland of the hamburger.

 
Fast-food hamburger became popular when Ray Kroc opened the first McDonald's franchise in the mid-1950s. First hamburgers with cheese, now they are called cheeseburgers, were cooked in 1924. They were made by grill chef Lionel Steinberger of The Rite Spot restaurant in Pasadena, California.

Now hamburgers and cheeseburgers are served as a common picnic and party food, which is cooked outdoors on barbecue grills. They are also good for backyard grilling and for home cooking. Patties for fire grilled burgers are made of ground beef, it may also contain spices or other ingredients. Some cook their patties with egg, bread crumbs, onions, parsley or other ingredients. A hamburger or cheeseburger with two patties is called double hamburger or double cheeseburger. It contains extra patty for those people who like meat or need proteins. Traditionally fire grilled burgers are offered with lettuce, tomato, onion, and often a pickle. Condiments are usually added to the hamburger. They are mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise and other salad dressings.

Today, fire grilled burgers - hamburgers and cheeseburgers are served in many fast food restaurant chains. You can buy them everywhere. For example, Burger King's restaurants sell a burger called the Angus Steak Burger that is most preferred by customers. "A burger made with 100% Angus beef and dripping with fire-grilled goodness" - claims Burger King's advertisement. This fire grilled burger is made of fire grilled onions, beef patty, cap leaf lettuce, red ripe tomatoes and freshly toasted corn-dusted bun.
