A person with a farmer's tan has pronounced browning or sunburn on the neck and forearms, while the upper arms and torso are pale. A farmer's tan is obtained by exposure, often unintentional, to sunlight while wearing a short-sleeved shirt.
Sporting a farmer's tan does not generally mean looking attractive. It may suggest the individual labors outdoors, perhaps he is engaged in some unskilled labour. A farmer tan may also suggest that the person doesn't care much for his appearance, as the inconsistent skin coloration is somewhat looking unnatural . Thought a farmer's tan line does not in any case mean that you are nothing else but a farmer.
The common farmer's tan line can touch forearms (farmer's tan line from a short-sleeve shirt or t-shirt), neck (farmer's tan line from shirt collar), thighs (if shorts are worn), ankles (farmer's tan line from socks, only if exposed), forehead (if a hat is worn).
Also, depending on the activity, the inner side of the arms may be paler than the outer side.
So, the nice thing about Farmer's tan is that you don't have to be a farmer. All you have to do is wear a T-shirt outdoors for 10 years to qualify for that working-class line of demarcation separating the dark brown skin from the white just about midway on the bicep.
Also, riding a bike, for instance, you can get a strong facial tan, no matter what time of the year. If you wear sunglasses or smallish mountain-climbing goggles, then a half-inch circumference around your eyes will make you look like a raccoon. But your hands will bear the most unusual tan. Catching the non-stop rays of the sun, the back of your hands and knuckles could be about as brown as a Hershey bar.
The part of the fingers between the knuckles and the joint could be lighter brown and the ends of your fingers will be vanilla white. The strange color gradation comes from wrapping your hands around the handlebar grips.
