Due to its numerous sporting achievements, Garmisch Partenkirchen maintains a reputation of Germany's top ski resort. The main ski area is located above the town on Kreuzeck, Osterfelder and Hausberg runs. Garmisch is easily reached from the Innsbruck airport, which is less than an hour drive in good weather. However, the majority of visitors prefer Munich airport, regarded as the main international gateway in this part of Europe.

There are four main ski areas, including Osterfelder, Kreuzeck and Hausberg, connected to one another, and Zugspitz. The latter is home to Germany's highest mountain, and hence, is associated with an impressive experience of Germany skiing. The best way to travel to the Zugspitze is by train, which runs through the tunnels in the heart of the mountain. The train leaves from the main railway station, passing through the village of Grainau and other ski areas. The alternative way to reach the Zugspitze is using the cable car. In good weather it is possible to enjoy the views of four countries from the cable car. The beginner skiers are offered training courses, while the professionals are welcome to experience the lengthy run from top of the Wetterwandeck lift to bottom of the Brunntal lift. The highest runs are possible on the Alpspitz slopes, which makes the area a popular site for Germany snowboarding. Garmisch is proud of its five runs to the town, which are enjoyable, quite long and in proper condition.

Garmisch Patenkirchen is a popular winter resort, providing a variety of accommodations for its visitors. Currently there are more than 40,000 beds for tourists with nearly 5 million overnight stays annually. Here you'll find some of the finest hotels and private houses. The town also houses US Army Recreation Area with a number of facilities and hotels.
