There are four main ski areas, including Osterfelder, Kreuzeck and Hausberg, connected to one another, and Zugspitz. The best way to travel to the Zugspitze is by train, which runs through the tunnels in the heart of the mountain. The train leaves from the main railway station, passing through the village of Grainau and other ski areas. The alternative way to reach the Zugspitze is using the cable car. The beginner skiers are offered training courses, while the professionals are welcome to experience the lengthy run from top of the Wetterwandeck lift to bottom of the Brunntal lift. The highest runs are possible on the Alpspitz slopes, which makes the area a popular site for Germany snowboarding. Garmisch is proud of its five runs to the town, which are enjoyable, quite long and in proper condition.
Garmisch Patenkirchen is a popular winter resort, providing a variety of accommodations for its visitors. Currently there are more than 40,000 beds for tourists with nearly 5 million overnight stays annually. Here you'll find some of the finest hotels and private houses. The town also houses US Army Recreation Area with a number of facilities and hotels.
