The Ionian island of Lefkas Greece means 'white' and the island's white rock makes cliffs really attractive. Corfu is to the north of Lefkas.
To the south are Greek islands of Zakinthos and Kefalonia. The island's interior is green and mountainous with one main road running along the coastline past its many superb beaches. Lefkas only qualifies as an island thanks to the Corinthians who cut a canal through sandbanks in 600 BC. Neglected in the past by package tour operators the situation has changed since the opening of nearby Preveza airport to charter flights and this is now a popular holiday destination.
Lefkas has a distinctive flavor, partly Ionian, partly Epirot. Because tourism has come here relatively recently, even Nidri, the only true
'resort' in Lefkas, has retained a Greek character. The east coast of Lefkas is sheltered most beautifully by pine and olive trees extending all the way to the water's edge. There are good views too, across to the mainland or the four Prince's Islets in the strait. The west coast in Lefkas is very different - rugged and open, with sheer white cliffs towering above an azure sea and some fabulous beaches, many only reached by boat. The mountainous interior is delightfully green with many villages. Some, such as Karia, are known for their traditional crafts. All can be easily reached by car.
There is plenty to do in Lefkas. A good excursion program includes boat trips to Kefalonia and Ithaca, the small islands of Meganissi and
around Onassis' Skorpios, the famous beach of Porto Katsiki, and around the island. You can rent a mountain bike, a small motorboat or learn to sail a yacht.
Lefkas Town (also known as Lefkada) is the capital of the island of Lefkas. Lefkas Town is a pleasant and friendly and typically Greek. It is an ideal place for Lefkas holiday, but it is worth making a visiting town if staying elsewhere on the island.
The two main resorts in Lefkas, Nidri and Vassiliki, are both famous for water sports. There are many great properties in Lefkas offering a
great stay for families and individuals. There's a family-run property set on the Nidri village waterfront with a good variety of restaurants
and bars nearby. Across the road from the waterfront; Nidri centre is 50m away; 250m from Nidri's main beach; restaurant next door, 100m to other restaurants and bars. The delightful hotels in Lefkas are well equipped and offer stunning views due to their location on the waterfront of Nidri - a fantastic base for exploring everything that the island of Lefkas has to offer. Nidri beach and its many water sports are only 450 meters away. Nidri Oscar hotel benefits from a swimming pool, pool bar and a not-to-be-missed restaurant offering home-cooked meals for lunch or dinner.
Lefkas is noted for its wine, and an annual festival of folk dancing held in August. As with all Ionian Islands Lefkas is busy in August.
Nevertheless, there are not many Greek islands that have direct flights and which have retained their traditions and character to such an extent as Lefkas.
