The rear suspension also consists of a bolt-on subframe. The perfect shape of the "E" type proved a challenge for designers. It is generally felt that even famous designers like Bertone and Frua were unable to improve upon the standard "E" type. There are some modifications based on "E" type: Michelotti (1963), Frua (1966), Loewy, Abbey Panels, Piranha by Bertone (1967), Guyson-Towns (1973), Ashley GTE Fastback (a fastback hardtop for the OTS, 1969).
One more thing which is famous in Jaguar is its powerful engine. The famous XK engine was born in 1948. It started out with 160 HP and 3.4 litre capacity, and ultimately grew to 250+ HP and 4.2 litre. Its basic design remained unaltered for several decades, proving the high quality of design and engineering.
Possessing an uncommon combination of performance and reliability, the XK engine was used by Jaguar family saloons and sportscars alike. An XK engine was created by main engineers Claude Baily, William Heynes, Walter Hassan, and Harry Mundy.
