Every year in February or in March it is the time of the carnival in Tenerife. Bigger than the Tenerifean carnival is only the carnival in Rio. The streets of the city centre are filled with spectacular processions, street bands and dancers. You can't believe the celebration in the street unless you see it with your own eyes. It's very hard to describe all the activities that you see in the streets. The highlights of the carnival are the Election of the Queen among numerous Carnival Queen candidates and the Burial of the Sardine.

Hatherleigh's Carnival Day starts with the first run of blazing tar barrels through the streets at 5 in the morning. Its aim was to raise money to pay for residents' hospital care. The procession is enhanced by the various costumed walking guys (collectors) and the different bands - brass, samba, pipe and majorette. The Carnival was awarded a National Lottery grant to help cover the cost of the centenary celebrations and to enable the committee to purchase 2-way radios which will help the safe stewarding of the carnival. Finally Commemorative Carnival programs are also available and they are free!
