When in the early 1950s Merrill Fernando witnessed the concentration of ownership in tea industry into several leading corporations' hands, he decided to bring top quality back to tea by launching his own tea brand and offering consumers something truly different. Three decades later his dream came true, when the new brand of tea, Dilmah was introduced, coined from his two sons' names. The brand introduced genuine tea admirers to the concept of tea picked and packed at origin. Pioneered by Merrill was the concept of the Single Origin Tea, following his commitment to remain faithful to the internationally recognized finest tea - Ceylon Tea.
In 2005 Dilmah teas celebrated 55 years of their existence. The Dilmah tea gardens, packing and packaging facilities have been joined by the Merrill Fernando Charitable Foundation, one of the most important members.
