When in the early 1950s Merrill Fernando witnessed the concentration of ownership in tea industry into several leading corporations' hands, he decided to bring top quality back to tea by launching his own tea brand and offering consumers something truly different. Three decades later his dream came true, when the new brand of tea, Dilmah was introduced, coined from his two sons' names. The brand introduced genuine tea admirers to the concept of tea picked and packed at origin. In 2005 Dilmah teas celebrated 55 years of their existence. The Dilmah brand has become a family passion, starting from Sri Lanka and becoming increasingly popular among discerning tea drinkers worldwide. Dilmah teas are packed in Sri Lanka's facility, regarded as one of the world's best for manufacturing excellence.

The Dilmah tea gardens, packing and packaging facilities have been joined by the Merrill Fernando Charitable Foundation, one of the most important members. Established on the leading principle that accounts on the success of Dilmah teas as a result of intense co-operation among the company's staff and the community, the Foundation gives part of Dilmah's profits back to the community.
