We all know Japan as a leader of electronics and communications manufacture, as we all buy the products of such world-known corporations as Sony and Sharp. However, an average consumer, owning only a few items for his household, or a businessman, including some of Japanese electronics and communications systems into his office usage, is hardly able to imagine the total scope of advances Japan has made since the end of World War II.
Japan currently possesses one of the most advanced electronics and communications systems in the world. Over eighty million Japanese use mobile telephones; what concerns the main telephone system, it is regarded as an excellent domestic and international service according to the CIA World Factbook. All major lines, connecting cities, are fiber-optic and replacing copper wires to homes has started. Japan maintains seven satellite earth stations and submerged cables to Philippines, Russia, Mainland China and the USA for international connections. The Internet Service Providers via Cable Network numbers three hundred and thirty four in 2004 and the number of portable phone users with the internet access is over seventy one million. Moreover, electronics and communications systems, developed in Japan, are not only advanced and valuable inside the country. Japanese major electronics companies have always brought and will always bring a huge impact on the world electronics market and development. One of the companies, providing the Japanese advance in the world is Sony Corp.
The electronics and communications systems, created through long and hard work of Sony Corp., are innumerate. Along with television, audio and video the company produces the highest quality PCs, printer systems, portable information PCs, broadcast and professional use audio/video/monitors, semiconductors, electronic components (optical pickups, batteries, audio/video/data recording media, and data recording systems) and other professional-use equipment.
Tracing back the history of Sony, we would see that it has advanced and made achievements almost every year since 1950. If to observe its world inventions, we will get the following picture. In 1960, the company launched the world's first transistor TV, in 1963 they launched the world's first compact transistor VTR, in 1965 - the world first home-use open-reel VTR, in 1982 - the world's first CD player, 1993 - the world's first continuous-wave room-temperature operation of blue semiconductor lasers, etc.
Japan is also a leader in developing electronic calculators. On December 1, 2005, the Sharp Corporation of Japan was awarded the prestigious IEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering and Computing by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of the U.S.A. in recognition of its pioneering work on electronic calculators, 1964-1973. The Sharp Compet QT-8B, using Rockwell-developed chips, was the world's first battery-powered electronic calculator, launched in 1970.
Finally, but still very important, Japan is a market leader in the development of environmentally friendly electronics. The country meets international requirements for lead-free and halogen-free technologies. Moreover, Japan has introduced lead-free components and products, much prior to the proposed international legislative bans on the lead use. The experience of Japan in lead-free electronics is of high value to the rest of world's electronics industry.
