Durban Travel -- a Mega-City with a Mega-Buzz!

Added: 05/23/2006

With a vibrant nightlife and a stunning beachside setting, Durban is a warm and welcoming city with plenty to offer the discerning tourist. Durban travel to this sub-tropical holiday city famous for its surfing and laid-back atmosphere is one of the most popular destinations in South Africa. The weather is balmy and pleasant all year round, and the surf is always up!

Durban is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Africa, with a laid-back beach culture and consistently high waves. The coast to the north and south of Durban enjoys beautiful beaches and warm water. The beaches are really the main Durban travel attraction as well as the Miami-style skyline. Surfing is one of the main activities on the many beaches, where you will find Surf Lifesavers with numerous signs delineating areas where swimming is safe and other areas where great white sharks re known to gobble up swimmers in seconds. Angling and boating activities are also very popular. The main beaches are the Country Club, Battery Beach, North and South and Addington. Lifesavers work on all these beaches. Umhlanga, to the north of Durban and Amanzimtoti to the south, continue this long stretch of beaches and resorts.

For people who aren't looking to hang-ten on North Beach, Durban travel offers some great cultural treats. The City Hall itself has a great South African art and nature museum. The city is a colorful mix of cathedrals, mosques, plazas and cultural festivals. Wilson's Warf is a must-visit for the holidaymaker. Crammed with markets and restaurants, the Wharf is a great place to pick up souvenirs before sampling some of the local cuisine of fresh and spicy seafood while gazing out at ocean views.

Being a coastal city, Durban is constantly affected by the warm sea current flowing down its shoreline. Humidity is high. The Agulhas Current travels southward down the KwaZulu-Natal shoreline, and is one of the most powerful currents in the world.

The climate is tropical most of the year, perfect for year round Durban travel. There are the summer thunder-storms bringing a slight relief from the humid atmosphere that prevails. The hills above the city are more temperate. The vegetation on the coastal regions are very abundant and tropical, and visitors to the area will see an amazing range of plants, trees and flowers not found in other parts of Southern Africa.

On the shoreline of the city centre is the Golden Mile of beach, leisure amenities and high-rise hotels. Along the ocean, a public promenade stretches from Durban's Harbor area in the south, right along the edge of the city and the sea, to the natural boundary of the Umgeni River in the north. All along this beachfront are public attractions, good surfing, a funfair and a great range of hotels all offering an amazing Durban travel experience.

There are restaurants, entertainment and amenities galore, but beyond the beachfront development the area becomes seedier and should be treated with caution after dark. The Seaworld Aquarium is an established attraction and includes over 1,000 fish, with sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins too. The oft-photographed Zulu, Rickshaw Men are to be found nearby, a curious emblem of this culturally diverse city.

Metropolitan Durban, or eThekweni in Zulu, is the largest, most vibrant city on the East Coast of Southern Africa. There are a harbor and Durban airports conveniently located for the city. In fact, Durban airports are conveniently located not far from the city center. The city centre bustles during the day and amidst the museums and civic buildings of colonial heritage, you will find yourself at the heart of a truly African city.

Create your own Durban travel experience to feel the pulse of Africa!
