While you are enjoying Asian culture and entertain follow the list of dos and dont's to stay healthy and prevent colds, viruses, and parasites.
- Wash hands often with soap and water. In the evening wash your nose out with a little warm water, you will decrease the chances that any bacteria will make in inside your body. Don't swim in fresh water. Salt water is usually safer
- Don't drink beverages with ice. Don 't drink running water.
- Drink only bottled or boiled water, or carbonated drinks in cans or bottles. Avoid fountain drinks. If this is not possible, make water safer by both filtering through an "absolute 1-micron or less" filter and adding iodine tablets to the filtered water. "Absolute 1-micron filters" are found in camping/outdoor supply stores.
- Eat only thoroughly cooked food or fruits and vegetables you have peeled yourself. Remember: boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it. Don't eat food purchased from street vendors.
- Traveler's disease number one in Asia is diarrhea. The diarrhea is usually self-limiting. Treatment involves drinking plenty of fluids and an antidiarrheal medication, e.g. loperamide (Imodium). Many doctors give their patients such medications as peptobismol and antibiotic Cipro to take with them for use as needed. Seek medical help immediately if you develop bloody diarrhea or fever, or if diarrhea does not resolve with simple measures.
- Do not forget about healthy bacteria, in other words dairy products. They are good for digestion. They are also a source of protein that is so necessary to stay healthy and strong. Attention, don't eat dairy products unless you know they have been pasteurized.
- Take vitamins, particularly vitamin C, to stay healthy and do not let infections fight you. Eat citrus to provide your organism with daily amount of vitamin C. Echinacea and zinc are highly recommended for boosting immune system and stopping colds and viruses before they get a hold of you.
- Don't handle animals (especially monkeys, dogs, and cats), to avoid bites and serious diseases (including rabies and plague).
- To protect yourself from mosquito bites and malaria as a result wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats. Pay special attention to mosquito protection between dusk and dawn. This is when the type of mosquito whose bite transmits malaria is active. Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. Children under 10 years old should not apply insect repellent themselves. Do not apply to young children's hands or around eyes and mouth.
- To prevent fungal and parasitic infections, keep feet clean and dry, and do not go barefoot.
