Japan is the land, where many religions, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Shintoism and some others, coexist together. However, the two main and simultaneously the most ancient religions are Shintoism and Buddhism, whereas Shintoism is a native Japanese religion and Buddhism is of Indian origin, brought to Japan from China. These two have coexisted together for centuries and many Japanese today consider them either Buddhist or Shintoist, or both.
