Related to the events of June 6, 1944, known ever since as D-Day, Omaha Beach is the Allied codename of one of the major landing points during the Normandy landings in 1944. Its is nearly 3.5 miles long, stretching from Sainte Honorine des Pertes to Vieville sur Mer. The west side of Omaha Beach served as a landing point to the 29th Infantry Division joined by eight companies of Rangers, while the first Infantry Division was given eastern approach.

The largest city of the state of Nebraska, Omaha is situated on the Missouri River, some twenty miles north of the Platte River.
