Located in the west of Grande Terre, the lowest part on the Atlantic East coast, Pointe a Pitre is the major town of the French Caribbean island and one of the most important and influential towns in Guadeloupe. The island's economical capital, its population totaled 28,300 as of 1999. The name of the town comes from the wharf of a fisherman who settled in Pointe a Peter in the XVII century. Since then the town has been damaged and rebuilt many times.
