Delaware tourism ? abundant recreational and cultural opportunities within easy reach

Added: 01/05/2006

As the first state of the USA, Delaware is historically colorful; as a compact USA state of 1,982 square miles set along the Atlantic coastline, it is perfect as a tourist destination. Everything is quite handy and it seems that the beach is a step aside of your accommodation, while the history and culture is a step to an opposite side. Comfort, fun, pastoral landscapes, tons of outdoor activities and miles of beaches are all Delaware itself.

Publications and advertisements for Delaware tourism project throughout the calendar year, promoting various activities that make Delaware a year-round destination. Many Americans travel to Delaware, since here they can find a lot to do very close to their home and take a good cultural and recreational rest. Delaware is only over two hours by car from both New York and Washington, and even less for visitors from Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The recreational Delaware tourism in summer is primarily accumulated along the Atlantic coastline with its fine sandy beaches and numerous lively festivals. "The nation's summer capital" of the Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and the laid-back Fenwick Island is historic Lewis.

It is impossible to say that one beach is good and another one is not so good. All Delaware beaches offer abundant recreational opportunities, including swimming, fishing, surfing and boogey board and raft riding. The water is warm to swim in from late May to early October. As the beaches are all designed as resort areas, they provide diverse options of accommodation, shopping, dining and exploring cultural attractions of nearby cities.

A summer period is also the best time to have a vacation somewhere in Delaware countryside, since the region is rich in freshwater lakes and ponds, rivers and streams that provide excellent swimming, boating and fishing. The rolling hills and valleys of Piedmont region appeal to nature lovers and present many spectacular settings for photography tours.

The cultural Delaware tourism is flourishing with many cultural and historical attractions, driving many visitors to the state. Wilmington, the largest city of Delaware, is a major hub for the Delaware international and cultural tourism. Although the largest city, Wilmington is home to only about seventy two thousand inhabitants and is a small charming city to explore. As you can conclude, the other cities, such as Dover (Delaware capital), Newark or Georgetown are much smaller, which makes them easy to cover even on foot.

The cultural Delaware tourism would not be complete without famous events and festivals, held throughout the country. Delawareans love to celebrate and whether you reside at a beach resort or in Wilmington, you will have a chance to participate in one of the Delaware festivals. Annual festivities contain the Delmarva Chicken Festival in Sussex County, the Great Delaware Kite Festival at the Cape Henlopen State Park, the Nanticoke Riverfest in Seaford, the Jazz Festival on Wilmington's Riverfront and many more events, featured in the Delaware event calendar.

Visiting Wilmington, take time for an excursion through the Winterthur Museum and Country Estate. Henry Francis du Pont, an avid antiques collector and horticulturalist, founded the Winterthur Museum in 1951, inclined to share with public his vast collection of Americana. However, during his lifetime, he did more than only opened the museum, he created an extraordinary thousand acre American country estate, immersing its visitors to another place and time with its unparallel collections of America's heritage. A walk through the breathtaking naturalistic sixty acre Winterthur Garden complements to a fairytale impression, produced by the estate.

The examples featured above show some, but a few options of the Delaware tourism. Truly, the region is so diverse that every season and every visit promises new experiences and the Delaware tradition of warm welcome and hospitality.
