Daily jobs: how to avoid stressAdded: 11/17/2005 |

Now, with rapid increase of business competition many people underestimate the danger of overworking and frequently neglect the possibility to break off working and relax. A lot of managers and business owners think they can score in fierce commercial rivalry only if cutting down recreation hours for their daily jobs employees. Yet, they ignore one thing: staff welfare and top management prosperity go side by side.
Today a lot of managers create rigorous standards for daily jobs applicants. The main selection criterion being usually conclusive when employing a person is the latter's ability to work overtime and at a ruthless pace. What is more, recreation time is mercilessly cut down, as the executives are petrified by potential likelihood for the employees to become lazier and finally start enjoying their time even to the detriment of working hours. This way it is strongly thought to increase business productivity and enlarge the total output of the enterprise. But they don't take into account that these 'sweetshop' conditions for daily jobs workers may create a real brainteaser in future.
It is to be remembered that the basic principle of good business functioning and further winning the market is work and leisure interchange. It has been scientifically proved that per every working hour there must be ten minutes rest. The scholars make believe that '50 minutes work, 10 minutes relax' system results in considerable business efficiency increase if compared to traditional working scheme.
Working overtime and the following psychological pressure on daily jobs employees will undoubtedly cause the lack of motivation, nervous breakdowns, increase of personal dissatisfaction with working conditions, salary and business as a whole. This definitely results in yield plummeting, or, at worst, business recession.
So, if top managers want not only to solve pressing financial problems and stave off bankruptcy, but also be capable of adapting to dynamic consumer market, they should overcome common bias and provide their daily jobs workers with good leisure opportunities.
The key maxim of good management is leaders` conscious contribution to forming the staff's positive attitude towards their job as a whole, their chiefs and colleagues in particular. Such kind of business treatment is the nucleus of Japanese management scheme acknowledged all over the world as one of the most successful. To reach similar success managers from other countries shall create a cozy atmosphere not only at workplaces, but, what is much more important, in a recreation area. This area should aim not only at daily jobs issues discussion, but also at communicating, unwinding, recharging.
There are a lot of opportunities for managers to fit out the recreation area so that the staff could refresh themselves as soon as possible, but on no account at quality expense. The recreation area can be arranged inside the company or even in the office -- a sort of a cozy room with TV, comfortable furniture, where employees can have a rest, say, listening to relaxing music. Or, if a company is large-scale and can afford some 'unforeseen' expenses this recreation area may even resemble a fitness centre with gyms, cafes, shopping mall.
One more way to provide leisure opportunities for daily jobs workers and create a warm atmosphere is so-called corporate parties. This can be a picnic on a picturesque river bank where workers can relax and communicate with each other. Or else, it can be a party in a luxurious night club. In any case, there is still a lot of space for management improvements.
