Up for adventures? Looking for a way to journey and at the samw time earn some money absolutely tax-free? Like meeting new people from all over the world? Then a job onboard a cruise ship is just for you! It's one of those rare jobs that will leave a load of unforgettable memories in your heart. It's a job available for practically anyone - be it a college student looking for a way to spend time in between school years, a graduate looking for a stable career in traveling, or anyone else trying to combine work with pleasure. It seems so alluring that you start wondering whether there is a catch. Well, yes, there is.
You might have heard that cruise job agencies have job offers all year round, and yes, they do hire hundreds and thousands of new people each year, but taking into consideration that cruise liners also have one of the highest employee turn over rates, it's not so surprising.
Well then, what is the character wanted in cruise liner industry? First of all, regardless of the job taken, to work on a cruise ship you must be an energetic outgoing individual with excecllent communication skills, who enjoys working in a diverse team. Also an emphasis is made on appearance, as employees must look tidy and clean at all times.
Another thing that requires special attention when applying for a job onboard a cruise ship, is making your CV look suiting, as your potentioal employers tend to be exceptionally picky on that. Advertise yourself in the best way possible, and make sure to check whether all your information is correct and whether you followed the format required by the agency (as each agency is likely to have different requirements).
Here it's also important to mention that cruise ship jobs are usually available to foreigers as well as to citizens of the country where the head office of the cruise company is situated. Some agencies will require foreigner applicants not only to be more or less fluent in the language, but also to have a working visa (for example, if you are a resident of a Western European country going to the US - a C1/D1 visa is aquired from the American embassy).
Now that this is all taken care of, let's look at some jobs offered onboard a cruise ship. On any ship, there are always jobs requiring certain qualifications and experience, as well as those not requiring any qualifications, or so to say, unskilled jobs. Among the latter are positions in housekeeping, food service, entertainment, retail and gift shops, photographers, office personnel, etc. Among the former are jobs on medical staff, some food service jobs, a job of a tour guide, some jobs in the engine room and on deck, etc. Note that all newbies on the cruise ship staff, regardless of the job they are taken on to do, are required to pass a special training course, where they are introduced to the ship policies and restrictions, taught how to behave in extreme situations, during storms, etc.
Well, does any of that sound appealing to you? If the answer is "yes" , then the first step on your way to a "perfect seasonal job" is to contact the nearest cruise job agency and ask them for details on the employment opportunities. Browsing the web to find more information and compare specific cruise companies also wouldn't hurt. Good Luck on getting the job of your dreams!
