Classical music festival in England

Added: 01/02/2006

The Three Choirs Festival is the oldest event of the sort in Europe and, perhaps, in the whole world. Since the beginning of XVIII century it takes place in English cathedral cities of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester, which host annual music meetings by turns. This festival is the most traditional and permanent occasion among all, now existing. And its charm -- the charm of classical music -- attracts thousands of people to annually admire it.

Nobody knows the exact date of the first classical music festival in England.  There exists only an advertisement in the 'Worcester Postman' in 1719 addressed to the members of the annual Music Meetings.  So, the festival of the kind was already a usual thing at that time.  It is a real miracle that the life of classical music festival is so long.  In fact, most modern festivals have appeared only after World War II, and they can only dream of such a long-standing fame and so rich a history.

Indeed, the history of the Festival is very interesting, its way to the world fame and popularity having not being bestarred, which fact reasons the respect to this occasion.  Still, the key lure of the Festival which provokes admiration is sure a beautiful music filling our souls, making our heartbeats stunning.  Its mesmerizing power and invincible energy can hardly leave indifferent.  You should visit this classical music festival only once to fall in love with it forever.

The Cathedral Organists are the busiest persons during the Three Choirs Festival.  Their duties include program planning, rehearsing with the Cathedral Choirs and Festival Chorus, and concert and service conducting.  Crucial is not to get wrong with the choice of music.  Three Choirs is a classical music festival, so the concerts include the great works of brilliant composers, such as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Haydn, and others.  Still, the Three Choirs gives an opportunity to hear the works of modern composers as well.  The only condition is that they should comply with the temper of the Festival.

Choirs themselves are the main part of the Festival, this following from its name.  Nowadays, only the 'Three Counties' Choirs may participate in the Festival.  It is presupposed by a great number of local choral societies wishing to be a part of such a famous event.  An interesting fact is that women were allowed to be included to the choirs only since 1770.

The Festival 2006 will take place in Hereford.  It will be a definitely outstanding sight, as the year 2006 is distinguished by a number of composers` anniversaries, so the Hereford Three Choirs will be an exciting mix of music across the countries and centuries.

First of all, the Three Cathedral Choirs combined with the Corelli Orchestra will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, so you will have a chance to hear his sublime 'Requiem' if come to the Festival.  The next highlight of the program is a rare performance of Schumann's 'Das Paradies und Die Peri'.  Fifty years after Gerald Finzi's death you will be able to hear his immortal 'Dies Natalis'.  And there will also be several works of Shostakovich, who was born 100 years ago.

As you can see, the program is magnificent, and it is only a part of the Festival.  The UK premier of James McMillan's 'Sun Dogs', the performance of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and more are waiting for you during the Festival days.  So, if you like classics you are guaranteed to get pleased.

As for prices, they are reasonable.  The membership costs 20 pounds per first member of the household and 10 pounds per each additional one.  Junior membership aimed at under-18s is 5 pounds.  It is obvious that hardly is there so much a substantial reason why you must give up the chance to go to the Festival and get a plenty of positive emotions.  And be sure that when going to the Festival once, you won't certainly resist the temptation to visit the Three Choirs again and again.
