Chongqing Travel - Discovering China's Unusual "Mountain City"

Added: 05/29/2006

With Chongqing travel, you can discover China's unusual "mountain city". Chongqing is a port city with the largest municipal area and population in China. Surrounded by water on three sides, Chongqing is situated at the confluence of Changjiang River and Jialing River. With beautiful hills and mountains, called as the "Mountain City", "River City" Chongqing has long been reputed for its wonderful scenery.

Chongqing is one of the China's biggest municipality as well as one of the largest cities in the world. It is the economic center, the hub of water, land, and air transportation in Southwest China with busy rivers and highways radiating in all directions. It is also an inland river port with foreign trade in the west of China and an integrated industrial city with balance developed agriculture.

Perched on steep hills overlooking the confluence of two rivers, Chongqing is one of China's most unusual cities. Chongqing hotels, grey tenements, and shining office towers cling to the precipitous hillsides that make up much of the city center. With its population of more than 13 million, the city is an important industrial city in China's southwest area.

Today, Chongqing is a modern city, China's fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Chongqing encompasses a wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests, and abundant flora and fauna. The focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges Dam, Chongqing is a tourist attraction as well as a commercial city.

Chongqing attracts visitors from home and abroad for its cultural heritage and other tourist attractions. It has many places of interest in both urban and rural areas. A host of must-see on Chongqing travel include Chongqing Museum with a collection of about 100,000 pieces of relics, which spans over 3000 years history from the ancient Kingdom of Ba and the near-mythical Three Kingdoms Period to World War and the Chinese Liberation. Grotto Art in Dazu County Northern and Southern Hot Springs Parks - is also popular gathering places. A typical Chongqing method of escaping the heat is to take refuge in a cool cave. Eling Par, a natural park with special plant species and a newly built tower (Liangjiang Pavilion) which provides the panoramic view of the entire city, is also a great sight to visit.

Chongqing travel packages are available with 2-day, 3-day and 6-day tour itineraries to Chongqing, Chengdu, Zigong and Leshan to explore the southwest part in Sichuan province in China. Traveling eastward along the Changjiang River, one can enjoy the magnificent Three Gorges. The city is the starting point for the Yangtze River Cruise, which explores the stunning scenery of the Three Gorges. Other attractions include the Dazu Rock Carvings, valuable works of art carved during the Ninth Century, Gold Buddhist Mountain, a rich repository of diverse animals and plants; and Fishing Town, one of three ancient battlefields in China. Ancient Ci Qi Kou village lures tourists to linger in its streets to buy handicraft souvenirs. Every year from May through June, the International Chongqing Travel Festival is held in here.

While on Chongqing travel, one should have a taste of its famous cuisine. Chongqing is renowned for its hot Sichuan cuisine and world-famous hotpot dishes. Street vendors as well as restaurants feature exciting spicy delicacies for the most adventurous.

With all the diversity within its borders, Chongqing is a great travel destination that is well worth exploring.
