Chicken Sandwich?s Popularity On the Fast Food Menu

Added: 11/14/2005

The sandwich was introduced to America in 1840. Today it is impossible to imagine our life without sandwiches as well as many other fast food items. With a plethora of sandwich choices, chicken sandwiches are, perhaps, the most popular. They are offered in almost all fast food establishments and can be enjoyed in endless varieties.

Though quite popular, sandwiches in general are considered to be an unhealthy food choice.  They are often loaded with fat and calories, making them a possible contributor to the growing rates of obesity.  If chicken sandwiches are your preference, you should keep in mind that grilled sandwiches are healthier options.  Grilled variations include McDonald's Chicken McGrill, Wendy's Ultimate Chicken Grill Sandwich and Harvey's Grilled Chicken Sandwich.  Caloric content in these sandwiches ranges from 350 to 400 and total fat from 7-16 grams.  To lighten the caloric load, it's a good idea to skip cheese and mayonnaise.  Some  less healthy choices are McDonald's Crispy Chicken (500 calories, 23g of fat), Wendy's Homestyle Chicken Fillet Sandwich (530 calories, 21g of fat), KFC Crispy Twister (670 calories, 35g of fat).

For those who choose salads as a healthy alternative to burgers and sandwiches, it is very interesting to learn that some salads provide as many calories as the burgers.  Salad toppings and extras are to blame.  For example, a Wendy's Chicken BLT Salad contains 710 calories and 24 grams of fat.  McDonald's Bacon Ranch Salad with Crispy Chicken including the ranch dressing has 520 calories and 32 grams of fat.  The better options are lean meats and lots of vegetables.  Salads with low fat or fat free dressings can replace salads with heavy dressings.  Pay attention to the meat that's on top of your salad as well.  Salami and sausages, for instance, are very high in fat and calories.  The same can be said about sandwiches filled with tuna salad and seafood salad, which are sources of excessive fat.

If you still haven't made up your mind where to have your chicken sandwich, take a look at the Subway menu.  The restaurant offers at least 7 varieties of them, each with less than 330 calories and 6 grams of fat.  Hardee's, which in the past has focused mainly on its Angus Beef Thickburgers, has recently introduced its new Charbroiled Chicken Club Sandwich.  The new sandwich is a combination of lettuce, bacon and tomato atop marinated chicken breasts with melted Swiss cheese on a honey-wheat bun.  You'll have to pay $3.99 for the Charbroiled Chicken Sandwich and $5.69 if you want a drink and fries in addition to it.  The marinated, skinless chicken breast filet and melted Swiss cheese make the sandwich stand out in a virtual sea of chicken variations.  Hardee's also plans to introduce new chicken items and even beef sandwiches on the menu in the near future.

If you don't happen to be a regular fast food patron, you can enjoy your chicken sandwich at home.  It's one of the most versatile recipe choices and you'll be able to better control the amount of fat and calories.  To prepare the Hot Chicken Sandwich, you'll need chicken breast patties, English muffins, sliced green onions and mushrooms, milk, pepper and chopped tomato.  Chicken patties must be baked in oven until just done.  Then place one patty on each muffin, adding heated mixture of onions, mushrooms, milk and pepper and sprinkle tops with tomatoes.  Or create your own chicken sandwich variation.
