Chicken Quesadilla Tastes Good at Taco Bell

Added: 11/15/2005

As chicken items grow in popularity, fast food companies have begun to introduce more chicken choices into their menus. One such creation is the quesadilla, which is considered to be quite a masterpiece of Mexican cuisine. Today the quesadilla is offered in many fast food restaurants. Taco Bell has recently introduced its Chicken Quesadilla with a concentrated marketing campaign.

A quesadilla is a tortilla folded over meat and a slice of cheese.  In the preparation of quesadillas, Mexican-style soft-melted cheese, such as Chihuahua cheese, is usually used.  It is a fried dish, but can also be toasted using a griddle, broiler or open fire.  The filling in tortillas may vary.  Beans, for example, may be substituted for meat.  But the cheese remains an integral part of every quesadilla.  In Mexico, the most commonly used cheese is Oaxaca, which originates from the Mexican state of Oaxaca.  In some locations, a ham and cheese quesadilla called Sincronizada is most popular.  Another variation is the Special Quesadilla, which is served in restaurants in southeastern California.  It consists of uncooked tortilla, filled with cheese and deep fried in vegetable oil.  Sometimes Mexican pizzas are made much like quesadillas , but using additional ingredients.  Tacos differ from quesadillas in shape, ingredients and preparation.  Quesadilla fillings are based on cheese, while a taco's are based on animal products or meat.

Like most other fast food items, quesadillas are rich in fat and calories.  Depending on the serving size and ingredients, the caloric content varies.  The Cheese Quesadilla served at Taco Bell contains 490 calories, while the beefy version weights in at 825 calories.  Chicken Quesadilla is another Taco Bell variety of the dish, consisting of grilled and marinated chicken meat and a combination of melted cheddar , pepper jack and mozzarella cheeses.  A selection of sauces are available as topping for the Chicken Quesadilla.  Enjoying a wide popularity is the Creamy Jalapeno Sauce, made of mayonnaise, minced jalapeno slices, paprika, sugar, cumin, salt and garlic powder.

The chicken quesadilla is also an easy dish to make, and with a great number of recipes, it's a cinch for enjoying at home.  The traditional variant of chicken quesadilla requires 2 tablespoons oil, ¼ cup onions, ¼ cup bell pepper, 2 minced chili peppers, 3 chopped tomatoes, 8 tortillas, salsa and sour cream.  Garlic, onions and pepper should be placed in a medium-heavy skillet.  Sauté and add chili peppers and tomatoes.  After adding chicken the mixture must be stirred well.  Heat a thin layer of oil in a medium-size pan and place a tortilla in it.  About one quarter of the chicken mixture and cheese should be added.  Cover with another tortilla and cook until golden brown.  Turn it over and cook for additional two minutes.  Serve it up with salsa and sour cream and enjoy.  If you prefer a more health-conscious alternative with less calories and fat, substitute chicken broth for oil, low-fat cheddar cheese for traditional cheddar, and fat-free sour cream for regular sour cream.  Instead of oil for frying, use a nonstick cooking spray.  Then grab a plate and say olé!
