Located in the west of Sichuan Basin and in the center of Chengdu Plain, Chengdu is the capital of "Heavenly State" (Tian Fu Zhi Guo), habitat of giant pandas and city of cotton-rose hibiscus. Chengdu covers a total area of 12.3 thousand square kilometers with a population of over 11 million. The history of Chengdu can be traced back 2,400 when the first emperor built his capital here and named the city. Through thousands of years, its original name has been kept and its position as the capital and as the center of politics, commerce, and military of the Sichuan area has remained unchanged.
Chengdu has been famous for its brocades and embroideries. Chengdu was the place where the bronze culture originated and the place where the Southern Silk Road started. It is listed among the first 24 state-approved historical and cultural cities and owns 23 state and provincial cultural relic units.
With a history of more than 2000 years and full of cultural and historical remains Chengdu travel destination is one of the most popular in China. Du Fu Thatched Cottage, where the famous Tang poet-Du Fu used to live and write his poems, Wuhou Shrine, Tomb of Wang Jian, and Wangjiang Tower are must-see for tourists. There are many more tourist attractions worth seeing on Chengdu travel. Bao Guang Si - is most impressive with a 1000 year old pagoda, as well as halls and courtyards with imposing statuary. Trade Palace, dominated by a gigantic statue of Chairman Mao, with numerous restaurants and markets nearby is popular with tourists. Zigong - a source of salt since the earliest dynasties, and the Museum of Salt History devoted to the brine and natural gas wells which have been used for a wide range of purposes since 11th Century.
A dinosaur museum was also constructed based on more than 100 specimens found in the region. Balmy, often misty weather keeps Chengdu green and full of flowers the year round. It is a natural habitat of the giant panda. Chengdu Zoo is an ideal place to see those cuddly-looking animals. Zhaojue Monastery is at the next door.
When you decide to take a trip to Chengdu, keep in mind that the Consulate in Chengdu requires visas for foreigners traveling to Chengdu. Improved land and airlines extending nationwide provide greater travel convenience. Chengdu is also the main inland access city to Tibet.
Once you're in Chengdu, don't forget sampling the famous Sichuan cuisine - it's a must on your Chengdu travel. Enjoying the food as well as the culture, shopping and having tea at a teahouse afford a deeper understanding of Chengdu.
