Charming And Magnificent Typhoon Lagoon

Added: 03/02/2006

Nestled near Downtown Disney West Side, Typhoon Lagoon is one of three water parks within the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Truly a Disney classic version of a water park, Typhoon Lagoon is also one of the world's most unique water parks, themed in the tropical island setting. The park has everything you may need for wonderful rest and recreation, including an artificial saltwater coral reef pool and a surf pool.

Opened in June 1989, Typhoon Lagoon is one of the largest and most beautiful Disney water parks, and home to the largest outdoor wave pool in the world. The park's theme is the Disney legend of a typhoon, which caused devastation of a pristine tropical paradise, and destroyed its ships and fishing gear. The centerpiece of Typhoon Lagoon is "Miss Tilly," a boat placed on the volcanic peak, erupting water every half an hour.

The largest, and the newest, attraction at the park is the Crush N Gusher water coaster, placed in the Hideaway Bay section, and themed around the abandoned tropical fruit processing center. The ride is also recognized as unique to North America, featuring two and three person rafts, and three different slides, including Coconut Crusher, Banana Blaster, and Pineapple Plunger, that range from 125m to 128m long. In each section you will be taken to spillways and tunnels through turns and twists as you slide towards the plunge into Hideaway Bay.

Among other attractions of Typhoon Lagoon are Humunga Kowabunga, three enclosed flumes, throwing riders down five stories into the pool in a few seconds; Gang Plank Falls, a family-friendly water slide with four-person inner tubes; Storm Slides, three enclosed water slides from the height of three stories; Castaway Creek, a tube ride, stretching throughout the entire park and passing through mist screens and waterfalls; Shark Reef, which allows guests to snorkel through the saltwater tank with sharks, manta rays, and tropical fish; and two single-rider tube rides, Keelhaul Falls and Mayday Falls.

Kids are offered the play area, Ketchakiddee Creek, with small rides and fountains, while more experienced riders can take advantage of the thrill ride, Crush N Gusher, with a one-person raft taken through drop-offs and hairpin turns. Available at one of the world's largest wave pools, Typhoon Lagoon, are surfing lessons and gear.

Located near the park's entrance, a gift shop features Disney souvenirs and such beach accessories as swimwear, sunglasses, and sunscreen. For fine dining, consider Leaning Palms, Surf Doggies, Typhoon Tilly's, Happy Landings, and Snack Shack, selling full meals and snacks, in addition to Disney treats, such as Mickey Mouse ice cream bars and basted turkey drumsticks.

As you enter Typhoon Lagoon, you'll walk along a path up a hill, passing an old beach patrol station wagon with some live macaws. From the top of the rise it is possible to see the former Placid Palms Resort, with its storm damaged buildings, Singapore Sal's Beachwear, Castaway Creek, and Gifts and Sundries.

One-day Typhoon Lagoon tickets can be purchased from the Walt Disney Company or, as an alternative, you can include the attraction in the Magic Your Way ticket. The latter is available with a PLUS feature, allowing you to visit Blizzard Beach, Pleasure Island, Typhoon Island, Disney Quest, and Wide World of Sports. The length of the Magic Your Way ticket determines the number of your PLUS choices, which can be used either at different attractions or by visiting Typhoon Lagoon every time you want.
