Charleston vacation: what to do in the "best-mannered city"

Added: 01/17/2006

Peculiar, historic and hospitable Charleston, South Carolina, is a tourist Mecca. The city is a feast for the eye with its beautiful pastel-colored homes, lining along the waterfront and grand live oaks, which are draped with Spanish moss. Walking along the longest cable-stay bridge in the western hemisphere, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge, linking the Mount Pleasant and downtown Charleston, gives the most amazing views of the Holy City of Charleston as it is often called.

The American most-published etiquette expert, Marjabelle Young Stewart, has recognized Charleston since 1995 as the "best-mannered" city in the US, mainly due to the fact that it has the only Livability Court in the country. However, Charleston residents are actually very polite, helpful and hospitable. Even if you speak little English, Charlestonians will be eager to help as best as they can, though Charleston?s hospitability is not the only reason to plan a Charleston vacation.

According to Travel + Leisure magazine?s tenth annual World?s Best Poll, featured in the August 2005 issue, Charleston is the sixth "Top City in the United States & Canada". The city was also awarded in 2005 for its accommodations, including The Sanctuary at the Kiawah Island Resort, Planters Inn and Woodlands Resort and Inn. All those in addition with historic sites, attractions, entertainment and scenic beauty of Charleston create grandiose opportunities for a top Charleston vacation.

Additionally to the world-rewarded accommodations, Charleston provides diverse travel packages for the most comfortable stay. For instance, the Wild Dunes Resort with miles of pristine beaches, delectable dining, two championship golf courses and top-ranked tennis, presents Charleston Food + Wine Festival Package, available on March 2-5, 2006. The package includes the accommodation in the luxury Boardwalk Inn during the Charleston Food and Wine Festival. The Festival is a culinary weekend, displaying truly unique flavors and culinary traditions of Charleston and it offers forty five events, such as wine seminars, cooking demonstrations, dinners and parties, and more. Some of the country?s best chefs, culinary authors and wine professionals will coordinate the events.

Charleston Harbor is ideal for a Charleston vacation with its renowned historical district, excellent restaurants, trendy shops, beaches and host facilities. The Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina provide a perfect accommodation with breathtaking views of historic Charleston and the surrounding islands. If you plan your Charleston vacation for 1-7 October, 2006, you will have a possibility to watch the 36th Sunfish World Championships, held in Charleston Harbor. The temperature and daily sea breezes in Charleston harbor make for an interesting and challenging regatta. Participants will sail in one hundred identical 2006 Worlds Special Edition Sunfish sailboats.

Generally, Charleston is a very artistic city and both visitors and residents enjoy a wide array of artistic entertainment in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Ballet Theater, the Gibbes Museum of Arts and fifteen theatrical companies around the town. Diverse cultural events and arts festivals are held throughout the year.

If you want something more ecological than a vacation in a large USA city, South Carolina grants a Hilton Head vacation and Myrtle Beach vacation. The Hilton Head Island was the first ecologically planned destination in the USA and everything human-made here, including five star hotels and numerous shopping malls, blend with the purity of natural landscapes, salt marshes, beaches and lagoons, live oaks and palmetto trees that cover the island. The Myrtle Beach area is famous for its beautiful beaches, fun-filled amusement parks, historic sites, a lively nightlife and adventurous water sports around every corner.
